Default Inlet plenums *update, new trumpets - pics*

almost got the engine in the 3dr now, but i need to think about getting an inlet plenum made up for the roller barrels.

do you neeeeeeeeed to have a trumpet for each inlet port, or can i just get a box made up to cover it all without any trumpets?

need some shorter ones if anything as there is another inch thick plate to fit between the head and the rollers for the ALS bypass

and its gonna be tight on room

Yes you need trumpets really.

Get some very short carb ones.

What diameter is the orifice for the entry to the RBs?

Stick with some trumpets if you can.

Just pricing up a swoopy jap style plenum for a skyline atm. You would be supprised how much the materials are when you start buying 114mm ally tube and bends!

Post up a picture of the black trumpets that are bolted into the RB's mate.

They look like you can probably sack them off and replace with with carb or TB trumpets, and in fact they even look like the common 2 bolt trumpets would probably go straight into 2 of the 4 bolt holes if they are 40 or 45mm as those are both common sizes for carbs.

Should be a piece of cake to find some then mate.

Are they carbon? or just black?

If they are carbon you will probably get more for them than some metal ones of 10mm or whatever will cost you

You want to make sure you have at least 20mm (pref more) between the end of the trumpet and the start of the plenum, so 19mm would be better than 35mm IMHO

PS

a "swedish style" plenum off Si B would be a good bet for the plenum itself I reckon if you have the space, then you would just need a backplate made for it to bolt to the RB's and you put the bolts through the trumpets first then through the backing plate.

Im sure they could make you up the backing plate too.

Only needs to be a flat bit of metal with 4 holes cut in it and a few drill holes, so its not exactly going to challenge someone of Phil's talents!

Can do. Its an R34 apparently. Chap is having new turbo setup base mapped on 9th july and then popping down to the workshop in it for the plenum.

Ah best book it for at least a week
I had a set of throttle bodies on my engine quite a while ago as a development for someone
And it takes quite a while to map as you have to set the boost in incriments and map that particular boost line all the way up to whatever you want,
Its easy to map for flat out its when you want it to drive nice,
Karl spent a lot of time getting the fueling right for when the throttle bodies just start to see positive boost .
Im sure garage 19 will do it justice

ill also be using a map sensor too, so hopefully that will make it a bit easier

It would have been RPM vs MAP that Karl did on alg1k's engine too mate.

That doesnt really make it any easier, in fact on transient fuelling I think you will REALLY struggle with it, given that S8 has known issues with that at the best of time even without TBs!

BUT, that only means having to learn to be a little specific with how you bang the throttle open from cruise etc, its not that big a deal to drive round, ok in a perfect world you shouldnt have to, but its not the end of the world.

Dan,
I didn't think the S8 could run multi-maps, which is what you need for a ITB based system?

This is why I went to T6 on mine and was one of the problems I understood that Alg1k experienced as well?

S8 cant run multimaps based on throttle angle mike.

So Dan will have to learn to drive around the transient issues that he gets.

Not ideal, but he doesnt have the budget for ideal, LOL

Hell people used to fuel turbos with webbers and still like it an you cant get much less accurate than that

How are you going to get the signal for the map sensor ?
And can the S8 do transient fueling ??
You would be much better with L8 !!!
Jenvey will do u full radi ones

For the map signal he will just have to T-peice them together with a balance pipe.

S8 does transient fuelling but not as well as an L8 does, thats on single throttle though which the L8 is designed for, I suspect on ITBs the difference between the two will be less obvious (ie they will both be shit, lol)

and as chip said, i deffo dont have the budget for ideal

cheers martoon, and chip

ill be using the injector plate off an early zetec aswell (not in pic)

this will be sandwiched between the inlet manifold and the head.

it will have 4 injector sized holes for each cylinder for the ALS bypass, and on the back of the plate there is a recess cut out in it joining all 4 cylinders together - this was originally used as the breather from the block back into the inlet for emmissions, but i will uses it as the take off for the MAP

i have thought about some of it lol
