Default Smoking whilst driving.........

Looks like its made it into the new highway code as an an advisory for smokers to take care whilst driving.

How long till you think it'll actually be banned altogether then!?!?!

If it causes one less accident or even one near miss than it cant be a bad idea in my opinion.

I wonder how many accidents have been caused by smoking in cars?

i would guess lots... they take their eyes off the road whilst lighting it! if its with matches then you have to use 2 hands! then if you drop it... it goes straight into your lap... how distracting is that?

the problem is then how much would road rage rise? its an un-known quantity...

btw.. i dont hate smokers... i just prefer to be smoke free and i cant wait until july the 1st!!!

Smoking IS banned in company owned vehicles when the national ban applies.
However the fine for not having a No Smoking sticker in the Van / car is greater than being caught smoking

Smoking in van / car Ł50 to Ł1000 fine
Not displaying sticker Ł200 to Ł1500 fine

NOT PREVENTING SMOKING IN A SMOKE FREE ENVIROMENT (i.e workplace or Vehicle ) Ł2500 fine
.

IMHO smoking a cigarette disables your hands more than chatting on a handheld mobile phone, as if I have a mobile in my hand and I need to get my hand back on the wheel I can drop it into my lap no problem, but with a cigarette you cant.

Its a mockery that chatting to someone in the car whilst you smoke a fag is legal, but that chatting on a handheld mobile isnt.

Im not fussed if its banned in cars or not really. Only complaint i have is that the previous owner(s) of my escort smoked, and its stained the roof lining, and sunroof glass, murder to clean up! but thats obviously their own preference, which they are entitled to in my opinion.

As for the smoking ban, it has been in force here in scotland for a while now, and I LOVE it. Pubs are fresher, cleaner and a better atmosphere in general. Best thing to have happend for a long time i rekon!

It takes longer to do any of those things than to just "drop" a mobile.

So its a nonsense that least dangerous of the two is banned IMHO

I know and thats one good thing i suppose. I wouldnt want to be driving a van or car all day that stinks of smoke.

One thing that really annoys me is people who flick them out the window when your behind them. One hit me the other day when i was on the bike!!!

here a spanner in the works for them, your not allowed to smoke at work right.

But what about people who visit people at home in their job, it's no the home owners place of work, they can smoke?

Smoking in cars can be dangerous, lighting it, trying to get it out of the window at high speed

hot ash in the eye, but the best is the attempted flick out of the window, that hits the window and falls onto your lap or into the back of the car

I smoke in my car, wouldn't car if I couldn't unless it was a long journey

social services has said, that although you are visiting the person at home, once you enter, they cannot spark up... its unreal... but PC is PC...

plus with the company car, you are allowed to smoke in the car driving to, from work and during the weekends, but as soon as you arrive at work, or 'start' work at what ever time you do, then you cannot... but who is gonna pull you over for smoking on the motorway... you could say you were on a break... too many loop holes...

So are you saying that if a salesperson comes to my house to give me a quote or sell me something, I can't smoke?
Try stopping me, it's my house, if I wanna smoke I will.

no... if its an arranged visit, so say a doctor or social worker or a nurse... a random cold caller can go lick their own balls before they can stop you...

As far as other distractions are concerned, tuning radio, kids etc are far more of a distraction than smoking.

Whats bollocks?

That it takes more time to put a fag out of the window than to just let go of a phone?

The ONLY reason they havent banned smoking while driving is they are worried it will lose them votes and they are all FAR more worried about getting re-elected than they are about saving lives.

sure youll have fun in the smoke free but empty pubs, pubs are dead up here now think everyone just sits in eachothers houses with an asda carry oot smoking as many fags as they want instead of standing outside in the pishin rain, weve had this stupid law for more than a year now and is killing the pub trade, most of the non smokers up here are even against it,there should be no smoking in pubs that serve food or that let kids in,but a pub just isnt a pub without smoke imo,all the pubs just lock the doors at closing time and get the ashtrays out anyway

aye is great all you non smokers sitting in the pub, gushing about how wonderful and fresh it is,if you want fresh air go and stand outside and get some and let us smokers enjoy our luxury habit which we pay through the nose for with our pint which we also pay through the nose for,we want smoking pubs, why not just make some smoking and some non smoking, know which would be busier anyway, then all you non smokers would follow us back to the good pubs and start whining about the smoke like the good old days

It ain't the smoking, putting the butt out or lighting thats a problem, its rolling the buggers whilst going around roundabouts with me phone under my ear that I find hard

Have you guys ever driven with a cigarette?

You cannot argue this if you haven't. You're being like this shit government by condemming it unsafe etc. etc.

How many of you drive with one hand on the wheel? I do, I know almost 90% of road users do. Who drives with the window down a bit, who picks their nose? who bites their nails, who looks around whilst driving?

Having a cigarette lit whilst driving is easy, lets face it, I only smoke and the majority only smoke on long journeys or smoke whilst on a motorway or A road. Thus making your empty hand useful.

Chatting on a mobile is in a different league. For starters you have to hide it from the law because if you get caught you get your pants pulled down. Second of all you cannot talk whilst turning a wheel with a big object in your hand. Thirdly you're put off by trying to concentrate on what the other person is saying.

None of these facts apply whilst smoking. I can turn a wheel with a cig in my hand anyday, any car, any situation. Failing that, it goes in my mouth and believe it or not your eyes and nose can get used to the sensation of smoke. The chances of dropping a fag are slim also. I have only once, due to me being a prat. But then accidents do happen don't they, or I suppose they weren't paying attention and the smoke and ash was in their eyes and lap.

Its not a problem for me, just like speeding isn't.

Well given that smoking will driving will:
a) be bad for your health due to the fact you are smoking
b) in situations such as yours be potentially dangerous while you try and concentrate on removing the lit fag you just dropped from your bollocks

Thats a reasonabley sound argument against smoking while driving.

Is there a counter argument that anyone wants to put forward as to why its a positive thing?

If not, then I fail to see why its even up for discussion TBH
