Think 2 reasons... ive heard they are fiddly to get on and off, and 2 can keep an eye on the belt... However that just what i was told by a mate with a Cossie.

Must say i find it odd they dont got back on, and is one of my pet hates

because it just something else to take off when they brake

more seriously cossies piss oil out round the front all the time, i know of a few who have been unaware of an oil leak right up to the time when they snapped.

and why asking for trouble dont shove anything into the moving belt and your fine

stones, escaped nuts & bolts etc.

i knows loads of people don't run them including people who rally it with no probs, but not something i would take the risk on.

u can check the belt with the cover on easy enough look around the back of the cover all it takes is a stone into your belt

im sure the belts are made so that oil dont affect them

could be wrong but im sure thats what gates told me about there belts due to engine bays being left to the elements ect that they are tested and thats why you should change them regular as thats when they get soft and the cord gets attacked by the oil

just what the company told me who make belts so could be a load of bollox

the idea makes sence though

they are the biggest company who ONLY make rubber belts for almost every car COMPANY aswell as to sell on after and other stuff that uses belts

it makes sence they use a design that aint affect by heat cycles/ different weather seasons/water and other things that will affect the lifetime of it inside the engine bay

if the cars dripping with oil then thats a different matter but they the spinning at 4 times a second would also act like a tumble dryer and throw it off the belt too before it soaked it aswell wouldnt it ?

mate,,, the main reason there on there is to stop people loosing a finger by pionting to a mechanic where the problem is with the engine running or reaching down for there screwdriver/bulb cover/ lighter they dropped in the engine bay when they left the engine running

same reason they fit warnings on rollercoasters about " dont get out of the ride until the ride has stopped" signs

check cambelt tension

mate before you know its loose the engine will fail,,,, thats a pointless check mate

how do you check cam seals ?

condition,, again how do you check that, have you ever noticed one thats failing before it has INTIME !!!

change em BEFORE there ment to be and stop looking at em,, may aswell look outside your window and wait for the person to break into it

You can see my Verniers with the cover on.

Excuse the state of it under the bonnet, the pic is from when I picked the car up.

i dont run one as i like to check the condition of teh belt etc

but cossie cambelt covers are a pain in teh arse

mine always rubbed on teh bottom pulley and took it off just incase it did decide to break through and a bit of plastic got stuck in teh teeth of the pulley

i have one now which is in half just to cover up the rusty pulleys

as i couldnt get it to fit correct at th bottom due to the pulleys

plus its going to be quite rare to get a stone in there anyhow unless you hit a gravel patch on a track day

Ginge im paranoid (and yes I do look out at my garage everytime i hear a noisy )

Ive just put a second set of camseals in due to the coonts leaking, if id left the cover on id never have known.

I guess your right about the tension/condition point but its down to the owner at the end of the day.

that was my point,,,,, the snow got though the grill and built up with the melting factor and still managed to damage the engine

he must have been one of those kids from final destination,,,, cheat death so ANY way to kill the engine and it happens,,,, SNOW,,,,,,, the odds on that happening to be the reason why to keep the cam belt cover off,,,,, you may aswell worry about the factor of meteors falling out the sky stone chippling you windscreen or running over a shadow that looks like jesus

if it happens again i sugest STAYING THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME

i doubt even SiB has had that happen to him,,,,,,,,,,,,, YET !!!

So as far as i'm concerned wot with rad, intercooler and wot ever else in front of the belt you will be hard done by to get anything in there apart from fingers lol

So from putting cambelt cover ON i got this

Which resulted in this
