Actually no.... It's been around a LOT longer than that, but that is what it is most associated with thanks to the press. That hand symbol is used by SO many widely different "groups" it's hard to say where it started, but probably in the late 60's/70's and was to do with rock music. Some say it's an alternative reaction/symbol to the two finger "V" sign used by "hippies" etc to denote peace, that became popular and synomamous(sp) with drug culture music in the 60's...

The "horns" as it's know nowadays has been used for years in all sorts of Rock music - from Bon Jovi and Kiss to Metallica and Slayer. Many "non-metaller" teens use it all the time, prodominantly in the US mind...

Symbols typically assocaited with clandestine "devil worshippers", or Satanists, within the music industry (which is typically extreme metal, based on early Speed and Thrash metal pioneered by the likes of Venom, Slayer, Judas Priest, and even early Metallica, to name a few) would also use this hand gesture, but more specific symbols would be the inverted cross and downturned pentagram - originally an earth symbol used by "witch healers" in medieval times.....

However, do the same hand gesture, palm facing outwards with the thumb extended - like THIS) actually means "I love you" in sing language
