Default First time *BASIC* mods.................

Following on from this https://passionford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=73865

What would you say is the best basic mods to begin with on a standard engine? i.e. Exhaust(Make/Model)?, Air filter (Panel/Cone)?, Chip?,

And what sort of bhp would we be looking at with these basic mods?

chip it first... lol

it wont work too well with the std exhaust, but itll give you more outright piwer than just changing the exhaust n not chipping it will... lol

zorst/filter/chip people often quote 180bhp but youre looking a about 160-170 realistically...

160-170bhp, that'll do nicely to begin with!

What would i be looking at to get near to the 200 mark?

Paul, i know what car your talking about and i would do this :

Speak to TT, i noticed he has his old 3" mongoose laying about (looks like a bargain to me )

then fit a K&N filter, either cone or panel it dont matter which imo.

then get a chipped ECU and fit it.

then if its not going to be driven permantly hard get a cheap charge cooler kit for it

Then take it to "my mate" Chris @ Power Engineering and get it set-up on the rolling road and you will be looking on the better side of 200 bhp (with the right boost)

200bhp from a chip, filter and pipe???

You're on fucking crack mate. I hope that you're quoting flywheel power there with the pipe pulled off the actuator and just before it melts piston number 4

PE built my old cab engine, what a cracking job they did there Just ask the lad I sold it to. Its been in his garage for 9 months now doing nothing

chargecoolers are excellent on rolling roads and short bursts i.e 1/4 mile strip. Its only track that they dont cope with the heat (i know this i had one and proved it )

Take what you like from rolling roads, but if you use the same one again, and again you get an indication of how well your engine is set-up and if modifications are an improvement to your power.

Mine pulls well and performs well enough from being set-up on the rollers

i'd be lying if i said yours and tonys 200bhp PE specials weren't very nippy, and from what i remember of them (it was a long time ago since i saw either car on the road remember) pulled a LOT better than your normal chipped up ERSTs, which is why i'm not very sceptical of your power figures, as you'd expect most people to be when told.

however that being said...

200bhp from a standard engine with a chip, filter, cooler, and zorst cry:

Andy,

I would have expected better from a potential sceptic such as yourself?

200bhp conversion that makes it EVERY time on PE's OWN rollers?

No, surely not?

Dan's RST now has my old Charge cooler and tonys old chipped ECU and has had the same set-up @ P.E and he made just over the 200 bhp mark and feels the same strength pulling as mine and tonys did

Interesting tho i havent been back on the rollers since the GRS was fitted, but i would place a bet that its down on power on the rollers compaired to the Charge Cooler

Yes!

Those 170s are well known not to make proper power till after 50k

Ok Andy, was going to speak to TT about that anyway.

Think i'll stick to the zorst, filter and chip for the time being tho....as it'll be coming out in a month or 2.

Its all back up and running now.

Still going to strip it and make it a bit stronger though.

Hello Paul

Despite what I have lurking in the shed...

Deffinatly a Mongoose exhaust, and a K&N, or Piper X cone (imo). I wouldn't get the car chipped without upgrading your intercooling system though if it was me. Do that first, then get it chipped.

I also have a BRAND NEW Kent 36 Cam kit with Double Valve springs and a Vernier pulley if you are interested Which I would suggest as your next mod after doing the above. I do see no reason why that by doing the filter, exhaust, chip and cooler you won't be knocking on the door of 200bhp @ around 18psi.

Welcome to world of turbo's
