Why does my screen keep saying AUTO ADJUST ???

Seems yesterday there must have been a power cut about midday - as when I got in the cooker and microwave clocks had both reset to the same time, and my hifi, when turned on after the power being disconnected, does a disc check....
Anyway, since then, everytime I turn on the PC or the monitor (a dell 17" TFT) the monitor always does an auto adjust, showing AUDOT ADJUST IN PROGRESS message on the screen and shuffling it about. During boot up, it does this 4 or 5 times, once for every different screen it gets!
I's never done this before - and the other screen (I have a second identical 17 TFT) doesn't do it

Plug n play - no drivers....
Plus it doesn't just do it with the PC. I have two monitors (near identical - ones an E172FP and ones an E173FP - the 173 is the one with the strange problem)
One is hooked into the PC (the 173) and the other (the 172) is connected to a Freeview/DVD player via the VGA input.
If I swap em over, the 172 is fine with the PC, but the 173 continues to tell me it's atuo adjusting when I switch channels or switch between Freeview and DVD....

Tried a factory reset, and it still does it
