Default help my cossie before it goes to graveyard

my car discovered a knocking noise a couple of weeks ago so removed the engine etc, stripped it down as you do, to find the main end bearings were quite badly worn along with the crank. The big ends were worn but not as bad.Took the crank for a regrind only needed .25 so i got all the parts i thought i needed, new bearings, cosworth oil pump etc.

So the engine got rebuilt and fitted back into car yesterday fired up straight away and was sweet as a nut no knocks or anything never drove it just let it tick over for about 45 mins fans came on the works so i think its sorted

Go to me mams today to go to york in it to run it in, and as soon as you start to drive and put it under load it FOOKIN KNOCKS like fook again So will it be the little ends as i didnt change them as i left the head on the car or is it something worse

The main crank was scored and there were bits of shells in the oil so the other bearings definitely needed doing anyway, only now im at boiling point

Id like to know as im so close to just fooking cossies off and breaking the car and getting a diesel, i really cant be chewed with it anymore

dicko, I never new you never took the head off, big mistake imo, and you should have checked the little ends that was the cause of my dad engine noise, what worries me is where did all the bits of worn bearing go..
prob hung up in the oil galleries.
is the oil pressure ok?

the cleaning process is so important when rebuilding a motor

I know its too late now, but for the £100 it would of cost to replace the head gasket e.t.c, you should have stripped it all down

Hope you sort it

fuck me ,how much have you spent rebuilding the engine Dicko
Sorry mate sounds harsh ,but half a job done ,and money wasted.
I dont know one end of a spanner from the other ,so i aint a fan of DIY ,you know that. But surely someone would have at some point said you best do both sets to be sure, wear and tear over the full bottom end was my noise last time .

Looks like the Zafira it is then

I would suggest taking the sump off and checking the oil pick up pipe as if that got slightly bent while it was out or even if it has been replaced in a very slight different place it could be getting caught by the big end bolt from no2 conrod bolt.

Its ok... i'm the 'DIY engine builders association's' no1 member.

As much as people knock doing it yourself i personally prefer the feeling of self acheivement even if it does take a couple of attempts to get it right.

there is alad up my way who had the same problem on golf.he took it to 3 engine builders and it still had the same problem.he sold it to his mate cheap.when his mate had a look at it it was the flywheel bolts wernt torqued up properly. the lad torqued them up and sold it on the next couple of days for double what he payed.
moral of the story....double check other/silly things and dont give up

The main bad thing about diy engine builds is that even that if your got the skill to do job (fix the fault) properly you have not got the mecanical knowledge (like a tuner would) to know what caused the failure so it just fails again

I know so many people that build their engines themselves only to have to take it back out two or three times.

Build it properly and build it once

Lee has taken the head off and looks to be little end bearings, however there is movement in the pistons as the bore is now too big, which i presume is causing the knock, but dont quote me im a girl lol, there is no det on the pistons which is good, looks like a rebore, new pistons and little end bearings

im sure lee will update when he comes home

Theres 2 groups of diy builders, those that have done it before and learnt from the mistakes first time and those doing it for the first time.

Without seeing it it's hard to comment but alot of people jump in feet first find something wrong then assume it's that. Really you should have checked the small end play when you had the sump off [con rod movement up and down]. likewise you should have done a compression test before you took the head off. now it's off you don't know if the rings/bores/pistons are worn so are going to go for new pistons, rebore and rings regardless. if compressions were in spec, then i would have just replaced the small end bushes which will save you alot of time, hassle and money.

That said you only learn from your mistakes and will know for next time.

this is the first time he has done a bottom end rebuild, learn from your mistakes though tbh he was gonna go low comp eventually, and i guess now at least everything has been replaced and its a fully rebuilt engine

at least he will know for next time

james

how would doing a compression test tell me if it was just the little end bushes? i did do a test before head was removed and all 4 cylinders were bang on 130psi but as said above there s a lot of movement on the pistons when moved with hand side to side.

so would the little ends cause this?

you sure 130psi is in spec? seems a bit low to me? that said i'm no cossie expert.

if compressions are ok why do you require a rebore/pistons? if the piston side-side movement was a issue you would have low compression.

again, without seeing it its hard for me to comment 100% but if compressions are within spec and piston-bore movement is the same on all the bores with no signs of scoring to the bores i would just replace the small end bushes.

ultimatly take the pistons out and measure the bores/pistons/rings to see if they're within spec.

Dicko if you hold the rod in one hand and piston in the other and try to pull em apart if theres any movement this is worn little ends.

Piston movement in the bore is wear on the piston, rings, bore but they all have a certain ammount of movement to allow for thermal expansion, so things dont sieze up
