Default Blinking Lights!

Howdy,
I just moved to a new house and went to swap the lights over. 2 red, 2 black and a green/yellow so i got 3 small block connectors and put the 2 red together, the 2 black together and the green/yellow in one ready to put the new lights Brown/blue up but without the light up the fuse it blowing.
Luckily we have a few lamps about the place but until i get this sorted we only have lights upstairs. Time is a big of a bugger at the mo as anyone who's ever moved house will know, so i'd rather go into it knowing what to do rather than spend ages trialing difefrent combinations out.
Anybody know where i'm going wrong?
Thanks for the help...

Neither of the blacks have markers on them, does that mean it connects with the 2 lives to switch it on?.
So 2 red and the switched black to brown
single black earth to blue ?

are you sure both reds are live? one might be an old un-used ring. it could be that the current is shorting through that.

I'd imagine the 2 reds are looped feeds one black is neutral the other is a switch wire , you need to suss which black is which m8.
