Default i've never seen one so long

cambelt that is. changing it on the subaru today and it's a monster due to quad cam boxer design.

relatively easy job though, although the key that holds the crankshaft sprocket and FEAD pulley is far too small and damaged making pulling the sprocket off difficult. there is no way to pull it, so i had to tap a couple of holes in it to pull it off with a couple of bolts and washers before i could get a pulley behind it

all off now though, just got to replace the crank seal and then reassemble in the reverse order only 5 sprockets to line up, looks like fun

Done quite a few scooby belts and always have to replace the tensioner for some reason

Have tried to squash the damper back into the tensioner and hold it in place with a slpit pin but then when you fit the new belt the tensioner wont release properly and doesnt hold enough tension against the belt and is noisy as hell when you fire it up

Any customer that now wants a scoob belt fitted we tell them that they need to replace the tensioner as well and this adds another 130 odd quid onto the price of the job as they aint fooking cheap !!!!

Other than that its quite an easy belt to change

you should ALWAYS replace a tensioner when doing a cam belt,,,, they last how many miles ?

if the tensioner seizes then what happens ?

all for 130 quid ontop of a 600 quid job

600 quid

Is that a full service and four new tyres as well !!!!!!

Always give the customer the option of replacing the tensioner, its up to them if it gets replaced or not but they are alwys advised to have it replace same time as the belt, some opt to only replace the belt so what can you do !!

Have tried to re-use a couple of scoob tensioners as customer wanted to keep costs to a minimum and it didnt work both times

well at ford when we change a cambelt the job includes all bolts needed and tensioner

when we change a lower arm we also change the pinch bolts,, cause thats what you are MENT to change

would you reuse a headgasket if a customer didnt wanna pay for a new one when changing a valve due to a failed cambelt

i get what your saying but its ONLY gonna have customers slag YOU off when you have done THEM a favour,,,,, and BAD things get heard about,,, good things never get remembered when people tell others

we had a bloke as us to drain the antifreeze when we changed his water pump as he just changed it when looking for the problem before takign it to us for a water pump

cut corners and get shit it was ive noticed

I can see what your on about mate, i worked for Ford for over 8 years so know what goes on at the dealers.

I now work for a small independant garage and get a load of customers coming in for work saying that they are fed up with being ripped off by main dealers !! We do a lot more in a service that the dealers do as alwyas remove the front pads, clean up and grease the caliper slides and pad carriers, rear drums off and clean up the wear lips from inside, properly adjust the footbrake and handbrake ( unlike a dealer service where all they do it crank up the adjusting nut on the cable at the lever !!! )

Even though we charge a fraction per hour of what dealers do we still get folk trying to save as much money as possible and where necessary we try and help them out, you do them a good turn and save them a few quid it makes them want to come back thus we get more work out of them.

Have to be reasonable though and tell them that there are certain things you cant cut corners on and they will just have to dig deep and stump up the replacement costs !!

main dealers do the jobs that are required for the age of the car

we check rear drums every 3 years as thats whats required and then we CHANGE the grease caps wheres some indepentants use the old ones

but dont get me wrong i dont use the techs at work but use a indepentant that i supply parts to as the guy is a fucking class tech,,, seriously he IS the man

i get what your saying and its true but theres always that risk and on a cambelt i wouldnt take the chance but thats me

i also changed my tensioner and poly v belt on my bmw when i changed the water pump on my car,,,, didnt need to but i dont wanna get dirty again so changed what i could at the time
