Default Turbo Oil feed filters. Good or bad idea?

Ive been told i should buy a in-line turbo oil feed filter for my new T34, but ive heard bad things about these, but i cant remember what.

Are they reccomended? or shall i leave alone?

Cheers!

Bad IIRC. If it blocks then no oil to engine and turbo.

Bypass the whole thing and change the oil regularly.

The reason they have a bad rep is because some of the Bailey ones screw into the turbo itself, and when dumb owner (of which there are many in the Ford world! ) overtightens it, it can crack the casing.

There's also the blockage issue, but they should be maintained as per any serviceable item........ which of course they are not which adds to the reputation etc...

Having said that, I'm never sure how necessary they are on stuff like T34s. As long as you prime the turbo, and replace the feed pipe (so cheap, it's crazy not to), and flush the oil through, you already have an oil filter on the engine, so it seems like overkill IMO.

Amazing that no one has developed one yet with a bypass valve and poppet indicator must be cheap enough to make and ALL the oil filters on the Aircraft I work on have them fitted, so it's easy to see if they are blocked/ restrictive

I have one, VERY HAPPY with it.

I've killed 4 turbos due to "oil contamination" according to the manufacturers. Since fitting my Bailey one, no dead turbos.

IMHO worth every penny.

I have always regularly changed my oil and filters, and since the pre filter was fitted, this too has been regularly checked and cleaned.

Get one I say, regardless of turbo type.

Personally, I'd do as your supplier says. Else you KNOW he's going to say no filter no warranty if/when it fooks up!

They always do, because most people just slap the turbo on.

In that case, when turbos have died from "oil contamination", 9 times out 10, they've been fitted incorrectly.

Just do an oil change at the same time, and flush the oil through so that it's clean past the filter.

its actually not been run at all yet. Its a fresh build, so may as well put one on for the sake of it. Bailey have one where you get a new oil line, and the filter goes in-line instead of screwing into the turbo. Might go for that one

That would be the better choice.

it is a good idea, but as pon rightly says, most turbos die because of oil contamination....

so, you have to be absoultely sure the oil is crystal...

thing is....

if the oil is shit, it will eventually kill the turbo..

if the turbo oil filter clogs up, the turbo will die.....but much more quickly..

if a turbo lets go the warrenty aint worth the paper its writen on
makes me laugh we buy a gt 35 good for and speced for say 650 bhp but the green card with warrent details states its only sposed to be ran at standard boost or warrent is invalid
we all still buy our turbos knowing this or turbo makers say its ran to much boost or claim the oil thing
luckly i never had a turbo get go on me
yet !!!!!!!

Because lots of them ARE blocked, and often haven't been changed in 15+ years.

Seen enough coming off of cars in some hideous states.......

Also to add they can be bought off ebay for a tenner, so for the price of a new fuel filter it would be rude not to!

Yes it comes as a full kit (just not the P-clips that attach the filter to the cam cover) - see my link above .

I dont think it is a good or a bad idea. Its just down to if you want one or not. Did the RS500 touring cars use one? If not, then why the fuss

I dont think so but was almost 20years ago and things move on, plus with a race engine things like that would be classed as a consumable part so didnt care about them lasting that long.
