putting a voltage across 85 and 86 (live one, earth the other - doesnt matter which) joins together 87 and 30. So you'd put what ever ur turning on to 87, and the power to it to 30.

Relays are as follows, in order of BRITISH, GERMAN(DIN), ITALIAN
C1, 87, A = load, ie item that you want to turn on
C2, 30, B = power supply, ie from battery
W1, 85, P = earth
W2, 85, NO letter OR number = switch
Most, not all use the GERMAN DIN standard, which is just numbers.
A few more useful ones which are quiet common are as follows,
1 = IGNITION COIL TO CONTACT BREAKER OR ELECTRONIC EQUIVALENT.
4 = IGNITION -HT OUTPUT TO DISTRIBUTOR.
15 = FEED FROM IGNITION SWITCH.
16 = TRIGGER BOX OUTPUT TO IGNITION COIL AND CONTROL UNIT.
30 = BATTERY +.
31 = EARTH.
31b = Return to earth via switch.
49 = Flasher unit from ignition switch.
50 = Starter solenoid to starter.
51 = Alternator output DC at rectifier.
56 = Headlamps.
56a = Dip switch to main beam bulb.
56b = Dip switch to dip beam bulb.
58 = Side marker and tail lights.
61 = Charge warning light.
75 = Accesssories, radio/cassette, cig lighter etc
B+ = BATTERY +
B- = BATTERY -
D+ = GENERATOR, ie alternator, dynamo
DF = Generator field

just be careful with which way round you connect 85 and 86 - very occasionally relays have built-in diodes across terminals 85&86 to minimise the back-emf voltage spike generated when it gets de-energised. This is quite rare though, and will generally have the diode symbol indicated on the relay housing with connection details.
