i have a 12v dc supply, i need to power a 5vdc gauge that draws 50ma. Can i just put s resistor in seriours to lower the voltage or will this only lower the current that flows? steve

I wouldnt recomend just a resistor as if the load current changes the
voltage will change and cause you problems.

You need a 7805 regulator chip.

Easy to wire up, and cheap. Postage will cost you more....

i got a few of these chips today, now looking from the front with the heatsink to the rear, i believe from the left pin to the right it is.

voltage in - ground - 5v output.

is this correct?

will i need to add an additional heatsink for my 50mA current draw? And do i need to use any other parts in the circuit?

cheers Steve

pin 1 input
pin 2 ground,
pin 3 output

50mA isnt much,, but a heat sink it always nice
