Love em, handling is a bit tail happy on standard suspension but a full Spax kit sorts that right out!! Get a Champion edition if you are gonna restore one, lovely motors!

TBH anything xe'd just isnt about that much in there origial form, so so many have been broken, simply as there worth more in bits

TBH i would get a cheap xe'd nova or corsa, as there been just as cheap, more avalible as well

My brother had an 8v Astra GTE while he was waiting for an insurance claim to go through. Have to admit I loved it

Mate had a 16v in Silk Violet and that went really well and was cracking fun. Only had it 3 weeks before some light fingered bastard had it off his driveway one night

Awesome cars for the money and stupidly capable, handling is normally a bit dodgy now, the suspension setup was ok when new but ages badly in terms of bushes etc, but put some new standard bushes on and a decent set of shocks and springs and you have a car that will lap faster than some pretty expensive kit.
Seriously good power to weight ratio back then, but still good now, roughly 150bhp per tonne, and the engines are tough as fuck, easily a better design than the YB IMHO and spares are everywhere.

Had a Mk2 16v for 3 years - very reliable and pretty economical. It had been pretty well looked after, even to the extent of a lot of the bushes being replaced and dampers renewed. I felt it was a bit undertyred as std so I stuck F1s on in the same size that the Mk2 Opel Kadett Gsis had as an option ( and also on the Champions ) but on Cav Gsi alloys thus keeping the all important ET49 offset ( crucial to the handling ). Suspension set up on the 16vs is quite different to the 8vs ( they run 2 ARBs on the back, more neg camber on back etc ) and are much more neutral ....to the extent that if you lift slightly in a fast corner they'll tail out a bit like the 205 GTi.

Engine was fantastic for a 16v - after I had the injectors cleaned, mine put out 169bhp as std ( on the same day, an E30 325i Sport with a stainless system put out 167bhp ).

I think the GTE was just one of those that people used to hammer into the ground is more to the point - they don't seem to get looked after and maintained like the 205 Gtis etc
