PassionFord Post Whore!!
I prefer the 7's but never owned an 8. I love the front of the 7's. (8's looks a little too rounded!). Underneath though I think they are pretty much the same (depending on models)

its getting to the stage where you can find 8's for less than 7's
they also did 7fq's too(no 6 speed though)
but why get a 7fq when you may find a 8 for simmilar wedge
i have seen 8's for 10 and a half grand 54 plate but the 260 model
5 speed and only 260 hp.
evos though are just begging to be modified so i would rather have
a 8 260 for cheep money and spend a few bob getting it to fq spec
or higher.
i prefer the 7 for rallying reasons, it was the last proper group a car
ralliart did,the 8 was only a international group n car.
i saw alister mcrae in the evo7 gp a car and it was AMAZING
and tbh i prefer the looks of it,plus the 9 looks too much like a 7 imo

We should have a sticky for Evo owners and wannabee owners
Right i wanted a TME but got offered such a good deal that i brought mine brand new, i have a MR FQ 320, out the box it is a weapon with some tweaking it is awsome. I do not really keep up on the prices as i am neither selling it or conserned about depriciation.
I do not see the point buying the 340 unless you want the sat nav and alcantra seats and the extra 20 bhp, as if you plan on modding it then the potential extra you have paid only buys you the seats and sat nav.
I have a 6 speed and on long runs the 6th certainly makes a huge difference to the revs and fuel consumption.
Do i like it, i fucking love it it is a very fun car to drive (have never drivern a cossie but been in a few genuine 400bhp ones) and as a point to point car out of the box i think very little will touch it, all this crap about a cossie can if i do x y and z maybe so, but let me do similar mods and then we return to square one again get my point
I prefer the front of the 7 and the rear of a 9 but these are all things that can be changed at a later date and i probably will change.

An VIII anyday of the week
Compare the 2 models together in full HERE
MODEL HISTORY
VII
The Lancer Evolution VII brought along the Lancer Cedia Body styling and improved engineering features and elegant body styling. The Body kit design accommodatse a wider track rim and wheel selection. The Body frame is a larger size but has retained strength while giving a lighter weight.
For its front suspension, Evolution VII retains the MacPherson strut arrangement - with its legendary handling and straight line stability characteristics - extensively optimized to the model's new dimensions. Cornering performance - from initial response right up to the limit - has been improved in a well-balanced manner by widening the track, optimizing the roll center height and increasing the bump stroke by 15mm. The steering gear box has been lowered to realize greater linearity in toe changes, and to increase vehicle stability when turning.
Evolution 7 features a new Active Center Differential using an electronically controlled variable multi-plate clutch. The ACD boasts a differential limiting capacity three times greater than that of the viscous coupling-type differential used to date. In addition, the ACD's ability to tailor slippage for different driving conditions brings levels of steering response and traction control not possible with a viscous coupling differential. A 3-way manual override switch enables the driver to select Tarmac, Gravel or Snow modes to suit his preferences or conditions. The ACD also frees the differential on operation of the parking brake - thereby enabling the driver to make more effective use of side brake turns in rallies and other events.
Improvements to the turbocharger, larger capacity intercooler and oil cooler, and the use of triple-nozzle auto-adjust intercooler sprays (with manual override) realize class-topping maximum torque of 282lbs/ft at 3500rpm as well as a wider torque band. To accommodate the increase in torque, the transfer, propeller shaft and drive shaft specifications have all been uprated
MODEL HISTORY
VIII
Evolution VIII, takes a further step up the evolutionary ladder with the introduction of Super AYC, a 6-speed close ratio manual transmission and other cutting-edge automobile technology.
Evolution VIIIs more aggressive and hi-quality exterior incorporates the defining elements of the new MMC design identity. It also features significant advances in aerodynamic and cooling performance reaped from extensive testing during development on the Nürburgring in Germany and in MMCs own advanced wind tunnel facility. Reducing drag and lift, Evolution VIIIs exterior lines give it better high-speed straight line stability and handling through corners than its predecessor. The design also achieves the increased cooling performance necessary to extract the full potential of the new models uprated power plant and drivetrain. The hot air extraction vents in the engine hood, meanwhile, are 60% larger than on Evolution VII and with an improved heat protector design double the effective area. The rear spoiler uses carbon fiber-reinforced plastic for both horizontal and vertical components a world-first on a 4-door production sedan.
The powerplant now generates class-topping torque of 290lbs/ft at 3500rpm, the result of optimizing the turbocharging characteristics of the twin-scroll turbocharger to increase boost pressure to 40mm Hg around peak torque. Engine durability and reliability have also been improved by uprating the aluminum pistons and forged steel con rods. With a number of other ranges the engine is now 2.5kg lighter.
Standard on the GSR, Evolution VIII uses a 6-speed close ratio gearbox to maximally utilize the extra torque generated by the uprated engine.
AYC has come under criticism in some quarters for not transferring enough torque to match the increased power outputs of the latest Evolution models when shod with high-grip tires and driven on race circuit or other high-friction surfaces. Responding to this, MMC developed and now introduces Super AYC after carefully calculating torque transfer requirements under simulated race conditions. Switching from the use of a bevel gear to a planetary gear differential, the new unit is able to transfer twice the torque of the current AYC.

VII over the VIII. I know plenty of people with both here but prefer the lines of the VII which I have. Few pics and vids of mine floating around on here.

I'd choose performance and newer technology over the slight frontal changes from the VII to the VIII.
VIIs are older cars - so why choose an older car without the newer VIII's technology just on looks?

its getting to the stage where you can find 8's for less than 7's
frosty
The FQs are seen as UK cars and will command more money than an imported VIII GSR like mine is.... 280bhp. With a few mods this can be easily brought up to the UK spec of an FQ300. There is hardly any difference and a lot of insurance companies don't load you for it being an import either.

I am not a fan of the 8 rear spoiler either so a few things I prefer the VII on. IX, nice car but has even more things I dislike over the VII.
So in short, very happy with the VII and personally believe it to be the best choice from the VII, VIII, IX.

There's so many mis-described Evos on AutoTrader - it's unbelievable, some of these sellers are totally clueless to what model they are actually selling There's loads saying Evo VIII GSR when in fact they are only an Evo 260 model

when i say i have seen evo 8 for around 11 grand (and under)
they were at british car auctions, but they did sell for that price
in the trade they are well behind what enthusiasts think they are worth
and in my experiance people will buy from anywhere if the price is right
you will have to trust me when i say,i have seen 8's for less than 7's
and that includes the autotrader

I paid more for my VII than my mate did for his VIII. We both bought them in Jan this year.
heres the links to the for sale adds for them both just to give you an idea.
Also i paid a little over the odds for mine compared to others but it is a stunner

Take a look at the adds and you will see that the VIII has everything on it including Coilovers / big brakes ect yet my VII only has a set of wheels basically. Both were advertised around the same price but i decided that i didnt need another modified car what with having the 3 door so decided on going for the best VII that i could find.
Like i said in one of my earlier posts for a standard car it deffo ticks all the boxes

I notice that the heavily modded VIII your mate bought had been 'for sale' since June of last year until he bought it in Jan this year. So it does go to show if you're not in a hurry to sell, you can hang out for a price you want.
Luckily I got the price I asked for my Escos which was quite a bit more than some are being sold for currently.

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
have owned both.
Evo 7 good value now.
EVO 8 a better car, 6 speed and larger fuel tank make a big difference.
If you can stretch to an VIII MR then much better again than the early VIII's, the bilsteins made a huge diffence/improvement ,the MR is a better car but of course costs more as newer.

i forgot to say that i reckon the big cock up with evo prices was
because of the evo 8 260, my local ralliart dealer once was selling
them new for 18 grand,so if your the sort of not clued up
car buyer who had got it into their head that they want a "EVO 8"
are you gonna spend 18 grand or 50 or whatever the 400 was.
that car "the 260" cocked a lot of it up.
i saw evo owners taking huge hits on depreciation, when a few years
before the evo8 260 they had excellent residuals
