The family tree is...
XDA
XDA II
XDA IIs (had a keyboard that slid out - useless keyboard, but step in right direction)
XDA IIi As original II (so no keyboard) but improved processor and camera
XDA II Exec - Best of breed with flippy screen - but big and bulky
My advice - go for an Ipaq or Axim if you dont want the phone functionailiy. Otherwise consider the SPVM 3100 (or vodaphone equiv). The orange ones can be unlocked to work with vodaphone, but only by orange.
Incidentally - the XDA Exec comes completely unlocked from O2!

gpsdash will be cool when skiing
i reckon at one point i was doing 70 mph but my mate would not have any of it (but he's blind and doesn't wear his glasses when skiing so doesn't go very fast cos he can't see far enough ahead ).
would be good to record the peak speed and go for it from higher and higher up the mountain to see how fast it is possible to go

If are looking for neat and slim. Try looking at the xda orbit.
More phone than pda but comes with an inbuilt gps unit.
(not tried one so best check it out at a shop beforehand)

what is also very cool is that you can get a map of the 'ring from google earth or otherwise and import it into that software and see where you are on the 'ring as you drive around
http://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview_ge.ppc2.php
why you don't just look out of the window though i don't know
as the example on the website though, would be good for walking around a city that you don't know, as traditional navi maps do not show you what the real world around you looks like

won't bore you with the details, but...
... i got it working
so, ive now got 2 PDAs up and ready for the ring, i should be able to get hold of at least 1 more (possibly 2 more if i'm lucky)
1 is already earmarked for nick as he's after one, but we can share the others for those that want to get Analysis of their laps

SapphyMike looks to. my one (from jim) has not been tested yet, but looks to work properly and you can get performance data out of it. it's programmable from a low speed to high speed (0 - 60 mph, 60 - 100 mph etc) or distance (1/4 mile etc).
stu's one now has the software on it that is working, but i can't get the BT GPS to talk to it

my one works fine jim
on the dell, i cannot get virtualcup to get a gps signal from the bt gps receiver
i've just installed GPSinfo on the dell, and that communicates with the gps just fine through com8
in the bt connections on the dell, the BT GPS is using Outgoing port com8. then in the gps settings in the system tab, the GPS program port is com1, and the GPS hardware port is com8. anything wrong there?
so when i connect to gps in virtualcup, i connect using com1 (as com8 is not available). when choosing an outgoing port for the bt gps, only com7 and com8 are available, neither of which are available to choose in virtualcup

ok, firstly most BT GPS units will oly pair with one device at a time. so if youve paired it to the HP, it may need to be re-connected from scratch to the Dell.
ok, your BT GPS will link to a com port, and it will be the com port specified under the bluetooth manager setings. as soon as you initiate a connection to that com port, it should kick in the BT connection and connect to the device. if it doesnt, MANAULLY conenct it before firing up GPSINFO/VC
if your BT comport is COM8, and GPSINFO recives data apily on COM8, then this is the one you want to be using for virtualcup.#
bear in mind only ONE application can use a com port at any one time, so if you'll want to close gpsinfo before firing up VC (soft reset's your best bet).
if you get it to work in gpsinfo you should be able to getit to work in VC.
im not sure what you mean by GPS program tho, you shouldnt need any 3rd part GP interface software on the PDA, it should communicate direct with the BT GPS unit.
ps i'll bring that pukka GPS unit to the ring with me so you can run it on both PDAs

that must be the problem that VC is not connecting to the BT GPS, as i can connect to it with the HP while VC is running on the dell (but not if gpsinfo is running on the dell and using the connection)
i have the following settings:
in Start > Settings > System tab > GPS > Hardware tab
Specify the hardware port to which your GPS device is connected. For more information, see documentation etc.
GPS Hardware port:
can select COM0 to COM9
i selected COM8 to be the same as in Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth
Baud rate: 9600 - i know that is correct
then we also have Start > Settings > System tab > GPS > Access tab
Manage GPS automatically (recommended) which is checked
if your BT comport is COM8, and GPSINFO recives data apily on COM8, then this is the one you want to be using for virtualcup.#
i did New Partnership, selected BT GPS and next, enter passkey of 0000, then finish
nothing will connect to the GPS until i also create an outgoing port in
Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > COM Ports, and it is here that i can only choose com7 or com8
> COM ports tab, i only have the option of choosing com7 or com8. neither of those are available in VC (only the following in this order: COM2, COM3, COM5, COM1)

GPS Settings. Choose the port that programs will use to obtain GPS data. Any program that uses GPS will need to communicate with this port. GPS program port: then a choice of (None), COM0 to COM9 but i cannot choose 8 as i get the ERROR: The GPS program port and hardware port cannot be the same value
think i need to reinstall VC, and then see

its a problem with the shonky dell stuff then
thats NOT a built in bit of software for windows mobile 5.
check the programs tab and see if theres some GPS rubbish you can remove.
you might need to contact the VC support people to ask about the COM port not showing up in VC... it should do!
sure it's not just dropped off the bottom of the screen for the selection box?

nick, what files do you copy from the PDA to the PC to get all that data out? is it the TRACE files?i only got 2 laps of mine timed and 2 of others, but it's a REALLY good tool! would reccomend it to anyone wanting to do track work

yes jim, just the trace .txt files
then on the pc software go to menu > analysis
i will also import the data into excel as i want to check a few things. have to figure out the protocol first, but gps receiver manual has that info
