Default Any computer peeps?

I've just bought a laptop for my little sister from as certain auction site. The problem is the guy has left his passwords etc on there??? He has given me all the passwords but once im in i cant seem to change them it seems like it was used as a business pc. Its completly differnet to my laptop ie you go into Control panel-User accounts and it has User name-Domain-Group and it wont let me change any of them? Also it has like a business log in when you first turn it on not like normal xp. It is running Windows profesional if that makes any diference.

Its just i dont want to give it to her having to tell her she has to use "Hockey rules" as her password

Can anyone shed any light?

Deffo reformat it. You should have a Windows reinstallation disc, either witl the lappy or one that came with your PC. Just stick it in and reboot and it will auto run, guiding you through it.

The only thing is you might need some driver or utilities discs - so might be best to check this out first before going ahead

Sorrys guys as you can probably tell thats gone way over my head!

Im not the best with computers at the very best of times!

Is there no way of changing it without rebooting it? As its got word, excel etc which is perfect for her coursework.

To get into the BIOS you need to hit one of the "F" keys as it first boots up, it will say something like setup=F12

Can you not get it off the domain? (just choose workgroup instead as this will take it off the business domain that it seems to be on)

Seems like whatever account is on there doesn't have admin rights, in which case you are screwed without re-formatting it as above

You can use your Windows disc, and as Gary said it will need to be registered (by going online) within 30 days. The laptop should have a sticker on it somewhere with the product code for XP - this is what you need to activate XP once installed....

You can reinstall Word and Excell later, using any disc if you have friends with it on disc, or you have it yourself....

Don't worry too much bout the bios thing mentioned - 99% of computers will read the disc as it boots up and the Windows disc is a bootable disc, so it will run itself

A few laptops Ive seen recently dont seem to come with a proper "recovery" disc, but instead have the hard disc partitioned with recovery data on that, and a program to run to recover, from within windows, which seems a silly idea to me, as if you cant get into windows to run it then u screwed

But might be an idea to have a look on the program files for a recovery program, that should restore it all to its base settings hopefully.

Either that or have a ask about a program called ERD Commander, dont ask me I only heard of it yesterday, but worked to "get round" a login password so might get u access.

Do a search of my posts, I dont do that many lol

It was most likely a networked business PC and has a customised XP image to suit that particular business.
