Have orderd the spark plugs from ford today for my saph cos 4x4? Now what gap size should i set them at? I believe for a stage 3 its around .6mm but whats best for standard?
The reason why im changing is that im experiencing splutter's on boost? Now ive cleaned all plugs and changed the the coil to a group A etc so giving the sparks ago

Any other idea's?

Cheers peep's

The biggest gap you can run without misfires etc.

Is there a sticker on the top of the intercooler?

Most 'normal' cars run 0.9mm-1.1mm from memory.

If you need to set it a 0.6mm on a standard car there is something wrong with your ignition system imo.

Escort, RS Cosworth,, 1993 cc, 1992-, Engine Code N5F

Ignition data

Escort, RS Cosworth
Ignition system type: El-ecu
Ignition coil make/type: Mot/-
Supply voltage: 11.0 - Volts without ballast resistor
Primary resistance: 0.72-0.88 Ohms
Secondary resistance: 4500-8600 Ohms
Distributor make/type: Mot/
Contact breaker gap/air: n / a mm
Dwell angle: n / a Deg
Ignition Timing - unleaded: 16/900 Deg eng/rpm (without vacuum)
Ignition Timing - leaded: n / a Deg eng/rpm (without vacuum)
Timing mark location: Pulley
No 1 plug location: O/S/F
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2
Spark plug make: Motorcraft
Spark plug type: AGPR902P
Electrode gap: 1.1 mm

There you go. 1.1mm

If the plugs don't cure it then the phase sensor would be the next thing I'd look at like Woodford says.......

A smaller plug gap has the opposite effect
Too narrow and the spark is too small. A larger gap gives a 'hotter' spark.

On tuned cossies (not running coil pack) you need to run a small gap to enable the plug to spark in the increased cylinder pressures AFAIK but this is far from ideal and should not be needed on a standard car surely?

if you have a hotter burning plug you are more likely to expierence detination, the cooler the spark the better obviously not to cold otherwise the car will idle lumpy,i spoke to are technician today and he said it is likely to blow the spark out at 1.1mm as they have never ever been set to that and hes worked on cossies since new,we use a motorcraft agpr12pp8 platinum plug, works absolutly perfect everytime.i agree with you a to small gap will cause problems.

Hi guys thank you
