i have the same prob

i'm with AOL (i wouldn't be, but i've got so much registered to it, its not worth changing)

but yes the router could have a week of being fine, but then it just loses the connection, sometimes just the internet connection, sometimes the internet and wireless

changing channels works for like 2 days

linksys need to get their act together

Mine only seems to have issues on the wireless. I think about twice ive had to power it down when its not let me on the net, but that doesnt bother me, just the constant wireless dropping out.

I think it knows im slagging it off its behaving now

There is no drivers for the router....?

So how did you manage that
When you bought it, your are supplied with a cd that is used to setup the router. Reset the router and use the cd wizard again, first on the pc, then use the other cd you would have got with the wireless network card

Trouble with linksys you have to follow the steps exactly! If you dont do it by the book, it will fuck you over

I configured it manually, i actually couldnt get it working so i got my mate who does it for his job to have a look, he had to type in the MAC address which he said it shouldnt really need, but it then worked.

All the set up cd does it makes it easy for really thick people doesnt it

Not really. The setup cd makes it work

I set mine up without the cd, but it would get confused with the wired and wireless, so would drop the connection. Pull the power and boot it back up again and all was well till it did it again.

Seriously, if you have the cds give it a go. Not like its gonna get any worse

WAG54G's are crap full stop, I unfortunately have one

When I ran a PC the connection always dropped, signal strength was crap and it sometimes would only run with the lead shoved up it's arse.

On the Mac it works better, I mean loads better but it's still not good enough. I'll be buying an Apple Airport when I can afford one and kick that Cisco junk in the bin where it belongs

I've got a Linksys WAG54G and it's excellent. Though i had to revert back to the original firmware after installing the cisco firmware as it fucks the wireless right up.

Same deal with the WAP54g access points, the latest cisco ones are total shit.

Have you got any video senders (you know the ones that beam sky tv upstairs etc) as they interfere with them no end (2.4ghz )

Mine is rock solid, sorry to see everyone else seems to have problems with them. Most wireless problems are down to the wireless card in the pc laptop to be honest, not the router itself. The only ones that i find are decent chips are the ones that come onboard on decent quality laptops, such as HP, Dell etc. All these PCMCIA card and USB ones seem to be utter shite as the drivers are utter pap.

As above I use a Linksys and binned my Netgear router. I kept dropping the connection with the Netgear but the Linksys has been perfect!

Nope, nothing else in the house really that uses wireless signals.

Joke is, as i said earlier in the thread, moved my mobile away and its not droped once since, been a good few hours now

I'll give the cd a go when i can be arsed but i bet it does nothing, i know its all configured ok.

And im sure its the router, my laptop works fine on any and every unsecured wireless signal i can find, and at my mates house aswell

I'm on blueyonder and use the wireless linksys.....same thing happens on mine but only drops put say, every month or so, its weird
I installed mine using the cd, it straight forward enough, plug direct into the modem, checks connnection, asks u to connect to the router, a couple of ticky boxes, change the password thing and hey presto.
You'll have a right laugh when you start getting limited or no connectivity, randomly random faultts or what?

Get rid of it, they are totally shit.

If you cable connect though they are fine!

Obviously that defeats the object if you have a laptop.

I have linksys and its great, but I dont got a laptop

I heard whilst expensive, BT's own routers are the best

ooo, just thought, do you have security enabled. My dad found (he has laptop) that the wireless works better when you turn security off. Bit of a gamble obviously but its a start.

The linksys products are shit on the default firmwear however they are Linux based which is a good thing and there is a massive amount of unofficial firmwear around for these products which makes them great

http://www.sveasoft.com/
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/
http://openwrt.org/

or just google for linksys hacked firmwear

I had this problem and thought it was my Linksys Access Point, but it turned out to be the Wireless-G Notebook Adaptor card that was at fault.

Some of the routers you can depending upon the release version simply because some of the official firm wear is no longer available from Linksys... If this concerns you I would suggest emailing Linksys support and asking for the firmwear for your router.

The people who write the hacked firmwear can often provide this also, some of the firmwear can offer amazing features and extensions.

the WRTxxx range are routers only (you need a seperate modem, mainly used alongside cable modems on telewest/ntl, or alongside a seperate adsl modem in a NO-NAT configuration)

the WAPxxx range are access points, for giving wireless functionality to existing wired networks

the WAGxxx range are adsl modem routers. Same as the WRT but with an inbuilt ADSL modem for use with BT, Pipex, Demon, Tiscali etc. One box solution for broadband over standard copper telephone line

what encryption are you using? I used to have a nightmare with WPA when transfering large amounts of files. Switched to WEP and its been fine. (this was on a USR router).

I was just posting the differences in models as they're a complete minefield to understand, especially when they tag GS on the end (theyre the ones with speedbooster AFAIK, which is pointless if you havent got a linksys wireless adapter..which incidentally are shit anyway )

I have WRT54G

Fine for probably 18 months.

No end of trouble for the last 2 months though

Wireless light stays on constant, and no connection. Usually need a reset to fix it.

I've 2 different PC's connected to it, an IBM laptop with built in, and a desktop with a wireless card. Both drop off when it goes

As someone else said, it's fine when you plug a cable in.

I'm not sure which netgear's people on here are referring to as being the best things since sliced bread, but every single one (probably 15-20 of them) that i have ever installed has been an absolute bag of wank.

Draytek routers are best but cost twice the amount a linksys does and then some. My Linksys does everything a Draytek does minus the VoIP stuff, which i dont need anyway. Got a LAN-LAN vpn tunnel into work that's totally faultless, wireless is rock solid, adsl sync is fine since my dslmax upgrade finally settled down etc. Majority of wireless problems are enviromental, as the frequency is so common. though i;d definitely try some high gain aerials.

Well..................ive been a doing a lot with the computer etc recently.......so decided to try running the cd after a factory reset.

It wouldnt work the first times half way through set up, told me categorically the pc wasnt connected to the router when it fucking was

Anyway, all reset and reconfigured, wireless seems good as gold now which makes no logical sense at all, everything has been configured exactly as i did it manually before, but there is less stuff configured than before?!

Piece of shit

Bet it plays up within a couple of days though

I have a Linksys Broadband Router Model BEFW11S4 Took me less then 5 mins to install and configure, and even quicker to set up wep encryption. In my laptop I have a Linksys Notebook Adaptor Model WPC11. Get excellent range all round my house, and can even walk down the bottom of my road and get good signal

Netgears are a cunt to setup and configure And I pity anyone that tries to do it with AOL
