my brakes are grinding, but i have pads left?

noticed in my focus that the brakes are grinding really hard when i apply the brakes.

i have about 5mm of pad left though which i dont understand?

has this happened to you guys?

i get it on my redstuff pads when they are cold but the grinding noise disappears once they warm up

Sliding calipers will wear the back pad more than the front so the back one could be low but the front (outside) may still look OK.

If their is a step on the disk the low pad may cause the disk to grind the step on the pad backing or caliper but if both pads have 5mm on them the step wound have to be huge
