the build quality and strength on these boxes can vary wildly, some boxes seem bullet proof then the next one seems to break if you change gear more than twice with them, there are different versions and the parts are not all interchangeable plus the box was redesigned to a different spec, then there are direct top and overdrive.
also depending on year some boxes have a different pitch on the gears.
the layshaft can seize into the transfer caseing making removal almost impossible on the earlier boxes.ok when its not broken but a large problem if you need to rebuild it,
parts are in stock though and apart from there coustomer services needing some improvement they are not badly priced for spares,
as like any dogbox its there history/rebuild that counts, and make sure who ever has alledgedly rebuilt it knows what they are doing.quaife are also very hit and miss, they tend to select two gears at once and destroy them selves in the process.
if you can find a 4.4 rear diff and step off then the original sport box takes some beating.
ive just sold an r+d overdrive box for Ł2,000 with zero warrenty.
if you can afford it and are serious about using your car then get an FFD,
also depending on year some boxes have a different pitch on the gears.

mark is correct, long term it will cost much more and an FFD will only go up in value now,i think the list price at the time off ford was Ł37,000 plus vat.
plus an ffd gear cost the same as a quaife/r+d.
