Any car registered before 1st Jan 1973 is exempt.

Still need to display a valid disc but it just doesn't cost anything

I heard the 25 year thing no longer applies................ie. once a car is 25 years old it used to no longer have to display a tax disc that was bought you were just sent one 'gratis'..............so the thieving wankers have scrapped that now have they ?

You still need to apply as normal to prove MOT and insurance but the disc is free.

It used to be a rolling 25yr thing but that was halted in 1997

The 25 year rule was about the first thing scrapped by the current Government when they came to power.

Instead of a rolling 25 years, they changed it so that only cars CONSTRUCTED before 1 January 1973 would be exempt.

If the car was registered after that date it might still be exempt if you can prove it was built before then. For cars close to the date that's easy enough because the car plainly wasn't registered the same day it was built (not that many factories were working over the Christmas and New Year period anyway.

This is just another example of their woolly-minded thinking to go for something like that instead of just using the registration date as the definitive cut-off.

Yeah, labour stopped the rolling 25 year soon as they came in, bleeders! My 1975 cortina was just coming up to tax free and soon as they got in they scrapped it. The tory's said they'd bring it back in soon as they were back in power but never happened cos ppl kept voting labour back in

Could be worth a little research on the actual build-date - I'm not old enough to remember the early 1970's car market (honest!), but certainly in the 80's some cars sat for quite a long time before being sold.

I'm sure someone somewhere will have a chassis number decoder that will help.
