Need some guidance on spraying.

I use hammerite for some components thinned down with Hammerite thinners. No problems

Kind of interested playing with 2K or cellulose

Just wanted to know ratios for paint to thinners and hardner to activator

As in new to it

 

your paint suplier will get you a mixing stick with the measurements on it

 

when you buy the paint it will come with a data sheet telling you the mixing/thinning ratio

The 2K I use is mixed in the following ratios but different makes can vary;

Solid colour/direct gloss - 2 parts paint : 1 part hardener + a splash of thinners and a few drops rocket hardener depending on temperature.
Base coats - 1 part paint : 1 part thinners
Lacquer - 2 parts paint : 1 part hardener + a splash of thinners and a few drops of rocket hardener depending on temperature.

Remember the hardener used contains isoynates and you need to use an air fed mask.

Keep away from Cellulose as its out of date and shite!!

As said above mate, usually 2:1 with a splash of thinners (10% or so in some cases)

Whats the script on water based for you sprayers, is it better / worse, there scrapping 2K in the future.
Will paint finshes be so good / last so long e.t.c

 

Were not on water based yet mate, only used it once or twice. Shouldn't see why it will be too much of a problem. Ok, so it takes longer to dry but it doesn't react like solvent does.

Finish should still be good

 

Water based paint is as good or if not better then Xlylene based paints (2K HS)

Just the clearcoat is a bit wack!

ive got an old shitter and a compressor and im bored so i thought why not see what happens. it cant come out worse than it looks now. and i may learn something and have some fun.

is there any books you can buy to learn the basics?

 

alrite mate 2;1 is normaly the ratio with 2k as stated above also the thinners side if things i normaly use 10% of the whole mix, but then again i do paint trains, only do cars now and again.

solvent based paint aint bein manufactured any more but you can still get it as most paint manufactures made a shed load of it before the law was enforced, basically its all down to the chemicals that are used and for our health.

i use alot of waterbased paints and the finish is not any different, i have just been introduced to a new paint company and i find that it is the bollocks and ive never had a better finish and thats waterbased.

you should try some mate and check the finish

I have been using water base for about 5 or 6 years and its was not very good to start of with but in the last 3 years its got a lot better but the clear coat is still a bit crap but my work are sending me to sikkens to see how they do it and they are going to be showing me a new clear coat that they are thinking of replacing there current one with so i will have to see what bull shit they try telling me when i go down in a few weeks

 

Jase Luke 89 of here has done my cage in water base and the finish is great also got a pot of Margenta sat waiting in the kitchen water based again

1 thing i noticed straight away was that its smell alot differnt to 2k know where as nice iver i love the smell of 2k

 

Depends mate, are there any repairs?

 

the odd bit needs a bit of filler from some dents, but nothing major.
most i just wanna tidy it up and change it from light red, dark red, rusty red and orange to just being red.

 

Sort your repairs then use 240grit or something to feather back the repair area. These areas want a good couple of coats of primer (1 light, coat 2-3 decent ones).

If the other areas are ok then you could probably just get away with flatting them, but if it's all pretty bad and you want to full prime the car then i'd go over the rest with 400.

Cover your repairs with a couple of coats then give the rest 2 full coats.

Primer wants to be 800 wet flatted. Then you can go on with basecoat or solid colour. Whatever you decide to use.

Obviously thats not going to get you the best job in the world but if you just want to tidy the car up as you say then it should be more than good enough.

probably wont need to prime the whole thing, but i'll see how it goes and take it from there.

now just got to work out what i need paint wise (primer, colour, thinners, laqure etc) and how to mix the stuff up and as soon as the weather gets better things could get messy
