If I remember correctly a few months ago they were discussing this on the radio with various independent & govt bodies and they said a charge of around £1 per mile would not be excessive for rush hour use of a road like the M25 !
They'd have mass rioting on the streets if they tried that one

The amount we are paying in fuel anyway they should just abolish the road tax.
It's not even like much of the money goes back into improving and maintaining the roads. Always amazes me how they say there is no money to resurface a crater filled road yet they have the money to put fooking speed humps in on every other road
Whatever the powers that be do we will get stiffed and our wallets will be the casualty

Here is a letter I wrote to the DVLA after being fined for driving without tax:
DVLALO (ENF)
Trafford House
Chester Road
Stretford
Manchester
M32 0SL
Your Ref: 329/F273 LVL
Dear Sirs,
I refer to your letter dated 11th March 2003.
I enclose herewith postal orders to the sum of £130.00 in respect of your pointless, unnecessary and extortionate fine. The duty for Road tax for a 6 month period on the said vehicle equates only to £85. How therefore do you justify that a vehicle driven on the wholly inadequate and farcical road surfaces of Manchester for a period of 24 hours deserves such a ridiculous charge? I am of the opinion that the whole road tax duty system is a mere robbery scam to pocket even more expenses from the everyday driver who already has the burden of overly priced petrol to pertain to.
I pose the question as to where the general public's money is being spent from this scam? It is obviously not being used for what it is paid for. In the past 6 months alone I have had to have my suspension geometry professionally checked on 3 separate occasions due to the disgraceful state of the roads in and around Manchester. Is the DVLA willing to foot the bill for this? I will answer that question for you……….. Is it bollocks!
Suffice to say that I have given up on the glimmer of hope I had that the blatantly useless and battered tracks that you deem as highways will ever be of any quality upon which to drive my vehicle. I suggest that you do likewise, and cease any potential future attempts to extort payment from me for the services which you have so pointedly and catastrophically failed to deliver - any such activity will be greeted initially with hilarity and disbelief - although these feelings will quickly be replaced by derision, and even perhaps a small measure of bemused rage.
I enclose a photocopy of my fingers in a derogatory fashion, as an expression of my utter and complete contempt for both you and your pointless company. I sincerely hope that they have not become crumpled in any way during transit - they were satisfyingly upright at the time of posting, and I would feel considerable disappointment if you did not experience their full satisfying effect. Consider them the very embodiment of my feelings towards the DVLA, and it's worthless employees.
Have a nice day - may it be the last in your miserable short life, you irritatingly incompetent and infuriatingly unhelpful bunch of twats.
Yours begrudgingly
Mr P Cookson
