There is 10mm to every 1cm - so 406mm is 40.6cm, or 128mm is 12.8cm
I can't belive this thread went up in the first place (bit like asking how much 126pence is in pounds ) but I hope to god that JL's answer was sarcastic and he clicked the wrong smiley!!!!!
EDIT - Just seens JL's second reply, I understand now

i bet he passed his gcse with flying colours
And I still say you don't have to do any arithmatic - you just move the decimal point. Not like you have to actually "divide" by ten as such is it - whatever the number, just move the decimal point to infront of the last number... 133 becomes 13.3 - 665 becomes 66.5 - 447 becomes 44.7 and so on and so on....

It's like the nine times thing you can do on your hands:
want to multiply, say, 3 by 9?
fold down your 3rd finger - the first digit of the answer is the number of fingers on the left, the second digit is the number of fingers on the right. 2 and 7 fingers gives 27.
If that makes sense
There is no multiplication going on there, but you get the answer you want.

Testing the future
Thrush i can understand that. you wonder how he switched the computer on
you're kind of right, but that's only because the metric system uses a base 10 number system. if there were 10mm to a cm and we used base 8 or something it would be a little more difficult than just moving a decimal point, but you would still divide the mm quantity by 10.
St3V3_C only because as humans with 10 digits we chose to use a base 10 counting system
for those that don't understand that, that's cos there's 10 types of people in the world - those that understand binary and those that don't
