Default how good are xr4x4 estates?

been having a little think,and i fancy a 4x4 estate as a runaround
are they any good?
what do they fetch at the mo,i am not after a minter, just a daily runner that i can chuck shit in the back and not worry about it.
are they in 2.8 and 2.9
i take it the 2.9 is better,24v even more so?
cheers
dave

they were mostly available as an 89 spec 2.9 and range from between a £100 snotter to around £600 for a good un

they need better brakes and the gearbox is a bit crap and exhausts are well expensive, but other than that they are fine

go and find a 90/91 car if you can and they are good fun, the surprise element in them is unreal when you pull up next to a chav and waste them

avoid the cat versions as they have hydraulic tappets which tedn to be fooked most of the time

clutches are a bitch to change too now i think about it

rear suspension is limited to the 2.9 estate only, the dohc ones are different with different spirngs too but a very nice and tourquey engine makes them a hoon to drive

so a 2 litre 1 is worth considering?
i always thought the 2 litre was very under powered for a 4x4
you live and learn

can you get many toys on them,eg electric windows allround,air-con,cruise,abs etc

thanks for all the help lads

I bought a 2 litre ghia 4x4 h plate for £350 with 12 months mot - used it as a mobile skip/van for nearly 2 years until the rot set in, didnt spend a bean on it in that time, then stripped out the 3.9 diffs and a load of other bits that were the same spec as a 4x4 cosworth - ebayed them and got £650 back and the local scrappy gave me £50 for the carcass

It pulled well with nearly a ton of old bricks chucked inside on the way to the local tip one time

2 litre dohc is tbh a bit pony, i have had good ones but feel
because of bad experiances with them, its just waiting to throw its
hand in,what about a td scorpio estate, they will do big miles no probs.
i have a 24v vectra sri estate v reg, irmscher kit,lovely motor
and it will pull a rally car etc no probs.
last owner paid 14 grand

that stuff about the 2.o dohc being underpowered is bo11ocks too
imo, i have had a few xr4x4 2.0 and they are a cracking car
when they are working, the car seems to handle the power well.
its just the heads go

heads only go due to too much antifreeze, fan switches packing up and fans that don't work causing them to overheat

put in a sierra td fan switch and it kicks the fans in much lower down the temp range and job done

when i said the heads go,i didn't mean as in headgaskets,
its the heads cracking, and i have seen many a good or they thought
they were good mechanic, fix one thinking it was the gasket, when
it was the head cracking, do the job a few times etc etc
bill the customer, then call them 5hit.
the 2.9 is the best one as they are reliable, mine have never
let me down when i have had one.

heads do crack, but only if they've been left to run for ages
if the gaskets gone and you catch it in time it's not too bad

no real reason not to drop a 24v in

theyre quicker, drive nicer etc.

they also use LESS fuel!

can do a 24v conversion for peanuts

if you want to do the 24V conversion you need a 2.9
otherwise you'l STILL need a 2.9 to strip for the bits, including the fuel lines

had a 2.0 twin cam, rwd, not much in it with a 2.9 4x4, both great engines, as in pretty solid, abused both for many miles.

with the 2.9 went the 4x4 24v route, abused that too, without any serious issues, worth the time of convertion it for the extra 50bhp and 5-10mpg more!

The 20 twin cam seemed to go better, for some reason, better revving? Better engine braking on the diffs? Whatever u get, it will be 10 times the value for money ratio, just keep it sideways lol

Love it!
Quite fancy a Cossie style Sierra estate for lugging gear about, would probably have to be a 4 pot or oil burner for economy's sake though.
The V6's must get piss poor MPG with the weight of the body and that transmission.... Especially the MFi 2.8

you don't want to know mate i remember a timed day out way back with the twin turbo and i was getting around 3 mpg out of it going up and down the runway

what was more scarey was the fact that the trip computer would sometimes read 0 mpg when i was giving it beans and never went above 13 mpg, even when i was crusing, downhill with teh throttle up it would sometimes see 19 mpg too

Exactly what I expected!
I know folk who cruise about gently in 2.8i Capris who get under 20MPG, so add weight, transmission and add a driving style more like mine and its getting nasty

I've got one aswell!

2.0 4x4 1992 in blue, and for what i paid its been a good car, head gasket i've done, put a starter motor on it, ford only part about £160, the headlining sags a bit, apparently they all do this?

all other repairs have been self inflicted

have achieved about 38mpg when on a run and about 28mpg around town.

Handles like a barge though, i've fitted poly front arb doughnuts which improved big time no rear arb though and you can feel it

Will go sideways though in the right conditions i.e. wet.
i'd love to try a 2.9 sometime as i bet they're a bit of a laugh, although might be hard finding a straight one these days.

could have said, i've got 3 sitting here and my guy only charges £90 a recon (but they are specific to the 4wd dohc engine)

headlining hasn't been saggy in any of the probably 10 that have passed through my hands in the past few years
even this one drove fine for around 150 miles after it hit a cow
