I've got a lot of pics from the 80s but they don't come out well as they're not so crisp to start with.
Used to follow the RAC Rally round in the 80s and have a great one of spectator parking somewhere in Yorkshire where practically all the spectator cars were Mk1/Mk2 Escorts with just the odd Sunbeam Ti/ Fiat Mirafiori thrown in .
Like the one of Steve's car flaming out as well
And is the last one the MCrae brothers?

Sorry to hear you've stopped buying the mag for the reason you've given mate. Had a bit of a count of on our cover cars though, and out of 11 cover cars, 6 of them have been running on 15" rims - 17" rims. You sure it was my mag you were thinking about?
Also, I suppose looks are a personal opinion, but the reason we recommend our readers opt for 13" rims on their Escort is this: they handle 10 times better on 13s than on 15s, 16s, 17s etc. Fact. I've learnt this the hard way with my car, and even if you're building a 400bhp Cossie'd animal it's much better to go for 8/9/10x13" rims than a larger diameter wheel of the same width.
Cheers,
Ben
PS I'll put up a couple of pics in a minute!

Thats odd cause mine handle's the best on the 15x8's its crap on the 13's and the 16's seem a little heavy.....

Problem with running 13" wheels and a 400bhp YB is you need some way to stop
I don't see that they can handle that badly on 15's ? I dont think any bigger is much good but isn't your average tarmac setup 15" wheels ?
BTW loving all the black mk2's

Just going on what people who've campaigned Escorts in race championships have told me Steve, some of the best in the business.
Jon Edwards (JEMS) for one, who built Craig Rainers race Mk2 amongst others. You know the car. Jon reckons he could get the car to go MUCH faster on 13s... in fact last time I spoke to him he said it was his dream that a customer came to him asking for a car to be built on 13s, as he knows it would kill the big wheeled cars.
Have also talked with engineers who worked at Broadspeed racing the Mk1s in the touring car championships and they said much the same thing... as have ex-Boreham bods in reference to works tarmac rally cars (yes I know tarmac rally isn't the same as circuit but the principle is similar).
Maybe give Jon a buzz about your car mate, he might be able to tell you why your set up isn't working with 13s (you and I both know you can't just bolt a different sized st of wheels to a car and make it work on the same suspension / geometry set up!).

Jonny - there's some wicked brakes out there now for 13" wheels... Alcon and AP Racing offer some top stuff and if you keep the car light (the whole point of a Mk2 Escort?) they should be more than enough. In fact, might do a brake test using 13s and 15s just to knock that theory on the head!! In Jons own words - "what size are a Formula 1 cars wheels... 'nuff said!" Like I say, you've got a guy who built a championship winning race car who says it would go quicker on 13s... I'm not gonna argue with him as he's the best chassis guy I've EVER met... and I've met a few!

And the EXACT same car today believe it or not. On 16s... proving to be a NIGHTMARE to set up properly (and before you say it Dingy that's because of a wheel size issue not because of the IRS setup!)
Ben
edited to say, but the 16s do LOOK a lot better on this PARTICULAR car I know!

Does any know if KUM 128V is still about?
Yeah the last pic is the McRae brothers at Combe

I'm not so convinced the IRS setup is the way to go to be honest.
Some like it others don't.
I rear Mcraes car wasn't any better for it although thats rallying not track stuff.
Ben- Already got hold of 315mm AP's so not much chance of getting those under 13's.
I'm quite sure I could exchange them for a suitable setup if I chose to run 13's but I'll stick with the 9x15's for now.
A proper Retro Ford brake and wheel test would be a good read

Dan - IRS, independant rear suspension. Escorts use a live axle as standard (ie and axle casing with diff and driveshafts 'built in' for want of a better word).
The white Mk2 pictures uses independant rear suspension from an M3 - a bit like Sierra where the diff, arms and and shafts etc. are all seperate mounted to a beam.
Ben
Jonny - yeah the debate will rage for years no doubt. My personal opinion is that a live axled car should stay live axle and an IRS car should stay IRS!

Yes Ben... ask Kevin at Miltons his thoughts when you see him... he's built a few 'proper' Escorts in his time, including Adrian Halls Zakspeed pictured above...
Shame for all you Escort boys that he only does Anglias now....
