is there anyway out of a mobile contract?
My phones turned to shit over the last 2 months, and the network coverage is even shitter
I've phoned them up and the poor chap in India reckons I cant do anything apart from upgrade (£200) or pay up the contract (£225) isnt there an easier option? they can just have the phone back and cancel the contract for me, if theres nowt I can do I'm just gonna switch it off and get a pay as you go simcard for an old phone I've got lying around, at least I'll be able to receive calls

There is only one way out of a contract that you have signed.
You have to send a letter in saying that they havent provided the service up to a relative standard, a standard that they will have promised in their terms and conditions. You wish them to terminate your contract or, the next letter they receive will be from your solicitor.
They will not query it.

I've heard of people that went travelling, putting a contract onto pay as you go and leaving the line open for them when they get back?
You could do that and just not use it?
Worth a try

Yes Paddy you can do that, Tempoary Disconnection, not sure if you have to prove this now, as i know you did not when i was in Disconnections in Orange.
If you are having that much problems with the phone then they should be putting it thru a diagnostic test and taking the problem from there, usually a technical issue (base station down / being worked on)
If no joy then i would go into your service providers shop and play holy hell ! Why should you pay for a contract that dont work

contact them and they will tell you that you can pay the remainder of
your contract off i.e monthly line rental.
before you do this change your talk plan to the cheapest
and most basic line rental per month then it will be cheaper for you to pay off.

yes mate it is tried and tested i was with vodafone and wanted a new contract with o2,
the guy in phones 4 u advised me to do this and i managed it no problem.
just phone them up and say you want to reduce your contract to the lower rate i think it's 12 quid or sumthin then leave it a couple of days and contact them to tell them you want to terminate the contract
the will ask for it in writing.
they will then send you a letter out for the outstanding balance on the contract.
remember and reduce your line rental first tho as this will save you a fortune
hope this has helped

As for Orange, might as well buy two cans and some string, the reception is awful and the customer service has just been moved from the business park I work on to India and the horror stories I've heard means they are a network I'd never use.
Cheers

Ok, so I tryed the "going travelling" story, and it didnt work
I dropped onto the lowest price plan while I was at it though, and that has dropped the canellation fee to £138, still dont want to pay for to cancel though.
Any other ideas? I suppose I could always ebay the phone to offset the cost, while its still worth something.

A lot of providers now you have to work down the talk plans keeping each one for a month before you can change again, you cant just jump straight to the cheapest.
I've been with Orange since they started and have never had any problems apart from right at the start about 1993 when it used to drop calls going down hills

I called Orange last week as I want to get 1 of the Flext TMobile contracts and they said that they will give me a new phone and match the TMobile deal - sounds alright? Just gotta wait til Im in my last 3 months of my current contract which will be next month. I think TMobile has stolen a lot of Orange's customers!
My sister is with TMobile and when she went to Oz last year they changed her contract to a pay as you go style contract, might be different now.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
My sister called O2 last week for disconnection as she wasnt happy with the coverage, the customer service (she is getting unsolicited SMS that are being charged to her and O2 couldnt do anything about it)
She got a cancellation date of the 24th Jan 07... Disconnected last Friday
Only 4 months into an upgrade too.
But then again, she did get grief 3 years ago when she tried to cancel with singlepoint. She had a phone in Dads name, he paid for it etc etc.
He unfortunatley passed away . She got onto singlepoint to cancel the phone and they refused as she wasnt the account holder and insisted on speaking to dad.
I called and got the same response, only they got a sarcastic message back saying that if they can communicate with the deceased then by all means try.... line went quiet.. then put on hold... came back.. sorry sir, will be terminated tomorrow
