Default Escort cosworth electrical problem................

Hi took the escort out for the weekend to the lakes and left it outside ( very wet )
next day started fine warmed it up first then gave it a boot, the car cut out and would not start.
it would turn over but not fire, I checked the fuses and it had blown no 3 fuse marked " KAT "
I changed the fuse and it started first time
I did a few more miles and it did it again.
why would the KAT fuse blow when there is no KAT on, could this be a fuse box problem.

Dave.

the KAT is the lambda probev heater IIRC, maybe water has got in the multiplug and shorted it out , it should onyl be live when the ignition is on and it earths through the ecu..

never never spray wd40 in there .. they have a special lubricant that wd40 destroys. wd40 is a good insulator not conducttor and you will make more problems in the long run...

Hi Dave do you mean dry the multi plugs ?
The last time they were apart Stu put some special grease in them, but I don't know what it was.

both them and the multiplug to the lambda sensor are prone to problems with water,

if they haven't been done away with, the 2 large multiplugs at the front, i'd strongly suggest getting them removed, - its a couple of hours work with a soldering iron and home adhesive lined heat shrink

Dave, the grease to use is silicon grease

We used it on every joint when assembling transformers for power statins to keep the damp out. But as said before it's probably best to do away with the plug altogether

Cant see that your ecu would be using the Lambda anyway

What happens if its unplugged?

On MOST P8 chips...

If the lambda sensor fails (excluding heater problems)

The ecu after the car has warmed up, will rev limit the engine to 4000
to serve as a warning that there is a problem as the cosworth doesnt
have an engine managemnet warning lamp.

This feature can be disabled by the chip tuner but generally if the
lambda sensor is used in the software, it will be left enabled.

It is very unlikely a faultly lambda sensor wil stop your car from running.
