Default FTAO Thrush or other Drummers

Happy new year

Right, what are electric kits like? When baby arrives i aint gonna get no time at all to play the drums due to the noise. So, i was thinking of selling the kit and buying a electronic one with amp so i can play with headphones on or at low level...

But, i dont want one if they are CACK...

Any advice?

depends on what you have to spend really.

the cheap(ish) Ł600 kits like the Yamaha DTXpress, or Roland aren't too bad, but don't really sound great. If you can get your budget up to Ł1500-2000 then you can get some really good kit like the TD8k or similar.

Roland, in general, are better (more realism) than Yamaha, but Yamaha are better for a budget.

Top of the tree is the Roland V Drum range - much more realist feeling than Yamaha's top line model, the DTXtreme) but it does come at a price tag....

Middle of the road money, the V-Drum vs DTXpress III (Yamaha) is a tough one to call, as they are very similary specced, so it's really down to personal preference...

I would bother with the bottom range Yamaha kit (DTXplorer) or the bottom range Roland either - they feel cheap, sound cheap, and are, well, just cheap really..... Neither are very expandable either...

If it was me, and I had to make a choice.... Tough call. I would probably have to go with the Roland V Drum if buying from the top range kits, but for middle range, probably the Yammy DTXpressIII - mainly just cos I prefer the control unit, which I think has better sounds etc. That said the pads on the V Drums are very good for rebound and bounce

Not being a lot of help am I?

If it helps, I would never have an electric kit. To me, playing drums these days is simply all about enjoyment, and half of that is the sound, feel and looks of the kit, so to get rid and play an electric kit would fufill me.... I am gutted that when I move, I won't be able to take my kit with me Will have to pop home when everyone is out and make a racket on my own

My mate has got the yamaha V drums? cost him approx 3500(?) and it sounds awesome, however, he teaches drumming and says that you can NEVER beat a proper drum kit so hardly uses the eletric ones now!

No such thing as Yamaha V Drums - you either mean Yamaha DTX or Roland V-Drum And if he has a Yamaha, and paid Ł3500 the he got SERIOUSLY bumped, as the MSRP on Yammies top line kit (DTX-Treme) is Ł1650, and they sell in shops for less than Ł1500.... TOp line Roland V Drum set lists at under Ł3k, and sells for Ł2.5k...

And I agree, there is no replacement for the sound and feel of a real kit, comparred to a leccy one....

My friend is very into his drumming and took up heavy metal as a challenge. He;'s now through it all and says that its all 'easy'.

He's been using a Ł600 roland kit for the last 2 years but after about 6 months the percussion pads were so worn that they were becoming too sensitive. But, if you duct tape them up the tape and the rubber fuse together and become a super material that seems to be tough and as bouncy as the stuff on them as standard.

you've got to put a bit of tape on them every now and then, but its quadrupled (at least) the life of the things.

He's a very good drummer if I do say so and he deems the kit to be useable. Though there is nothing like the sound of his full acostic

HTH

If you can afford it, the best bet would be to store your acoustic set away somewhere, and just use a cheap electric one for basic practice.

Do you gig at all?

Lee - I was gonna, never panned out tho

Graham - not for years no. I play now only for "recreation" - purely for my own enjoyment. As such I don't "practice" either, I simply don't need to (and thats not meant to sound big headed or anything) - I dno't need to practice as I don't have anything to practice for, playing is just for my own ejoyment of playing... As such, a leccy kit is almost a betrayal to that, for me anyway....
