i know this is gonna sound stupid but i got my decks about 7 years ago and a mate who had being djing for a while set them all up for me.
i just left them how he done them and have never worried.
but im just wondering how u actually do set them up.
its the big weight on the back of the arm and the anti skate bit im curious about.
i know you have to set the weight so its stays level and then add a certain amount. but how much?
and what is the anti skate about?
they are gemini xl600's btw with stanton 505's
cheers in advance

Firstly, forget about the anti-skate (set it to ZERO).......as it only has an influence when using low tracking weights (i.e.under 2 grams).........
Release arm from it's rest and balance up so that it is neither dipping down or lifting upwards (in other words arm tube is ballancing LEVEL).......now set the vernier ring on the counter ballance weight to ZERO. With zero showing, check that arm tube still level, then APPLY the tracking weight required - Satanton 500 series = 3.5 - 4.5 grams.........

right .. now use that setup in a club and see what happens
![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
the worst bit is most dj's i know just wind up the weights so they are at their heaviest .. on 1200's its a bit harder as you have to take into account the fact you can move that actual height of the tone arm.
once you have the correct level or the stylys tip then you can play with tracking weight.
douug has got it correct but to actually be able to spinback or even drop stuff in you need it to be slightly heavier just to help it so it will not jump out of that part of the groove.
its not all about weight but the angle of the stylus in relationship to the record surface too flat will result in it running on the back of the tip and it sounds muffled .

cheers for the advice guys.
i think ive got height adjustment on my decks too.
i'll give it a go setting them up like that and set them heavier if needed.
i dont think i'll ever go to cd decks, espciailly after ive spent so much on my vinyl.
there is never the same selection on cd anyway ive found.
