why can i only save a pic as a .bmp again??

why can i only save a pic as a .bmp again??
tryed saving pics but it will only let me save as bloody .bmp !!
the computer has a new hard drive and i know ive got things missing cos but it usued to do this when i had to many things in My Pictures?? but ive only got 4 pics at the mo ??
really could do with some help cos i cant save .gifs either !

i used to have to click TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS then VIEW OBJECTS cos sometimes there was something that wasnt installed properly ????? once i delete the dodgy thing it would save ok again???
really pissing me of now cos i cant figure it out ??
