Had a mk1 as my first car, although had a 1600 with a twin choke webber on (had that much back-pressure when I got it probs had less power then a 1300). Will defo get away in the wet, as nearly had mine in the barriers a few times. Problem is not having a LSD.

first few cars i had were early escorts, never more than 1.3 and they used to get the arse out just fine in the wet.. in the dry just expect lots of tramping.. if you're lucky!

A larger engine?
Cheaper on insurance than heavily modifying the existing one too, AND better on fuel

If your planning on drifting your a lot more likely to crash, a lot, regardless of power, than you ever will being a straight line billy, even with a powerful engine.
But youl soon become a much better driver than most, thats for sure.
And quite possibly banned from driving, or dead
Unless your not planning to diff it up on the streets on the wand on ever entry to a corner, but thats boring innit

do it mate, my first car everyone said id kill myself (modified GTT) and never crashed it.
learning to drive good from the off is the best way, better than getting bad habits and shit like most do.

on the other hand i smashed the shite out of my first few cars and they were all rwd escorts... one of the accidents wasn't my fault.. the other 15-20 or so (realistic estimate) were due to lack of attention/skill on my part.
as far as a bigger engine goes, don't even think about trying to pull a fast one on your insurers. if/when/maybe you crash it they'll be looking closely at the engine, and you don't have to look too closely to see that the 1600 crossflow block it 1-2" taller than the 1300/1100 ones.

I'd recomend you get a 4 door if your going to get one. They do look a bit gay but the prices of nice 2 doors have flown up lately.
I had a Mk1 Escort 1300GT (the GT, E and Sport models have about 80bhp) as my 1st car (3 years ago), was great fun but started to do my head in because it was shite for reliability. Economy was piss poor once I tuned it too. Loved it though, was such a cool 1st car. It span it once, so it did have enough power to be lively.
I then had a 300bhp S13 at 19 which was a bit more lively.

"ooh a cars rare, so lets drive like a total gaylord"
Cars are to be used, the more RWD Escorts on track etc etc the better IMO

Thats what I did as loads cheaper to do, although that was 10yrs ago(Bearing in mind then I paid £300 for mine and a decent mex/rs2000 mk1 could be had for £3-4k). I got a 4dr 1100 mk1 shell, with a 1600 x flow, rebuilt with webber carb, rs2000 back axle, GT front suspension/brakes, and lowered/stiffened leafs on the back. Looked quite cool as well in daytona yellow with RS 4 spokes.
Sold it to a guy who worked in the local shell garage for £700, who then tried to sell it on as a 4dr rs1600 (cos i'd put the badges on the side, nugget ). Think he ended up stuffing it, which was a bit of a waste. HPY 257N in case its still about.
