Diesel WRC car?
I was hooning down some country lanes on the way home last night (i live in the sticks) in my TD mundano when the thought occured to me - why hasn't anybody made a diesel WRC car yet?
Shed loads of torque at absolutly any rpm, instant response and pretty powerful these days???
Would be a good way of advertising for a company like citroen who make 80% oil burners.

Audi have made a successful TDi Le Mans car. Was watching it race last year. Is almost silent but incredibly quick. It came 1st in its class. not sure it was as exciting to watch it as the previous year when it was petrol. A big part of motor racing for me is the noise as well as the speed

Bu tallgedly they have had to bend the rules somewhat to allow the car to be legal, but if they want to push Diesl technology then I suppose they have to

why
i do agree about the quietness though, was very surreal sitting by the side of that track and seeing this audi glide by.....unless you were there you cant really appreciate how loud the cars are, and the diesel was just smooth and quiet

useable rev range?
change change change change lol
yeah its alright having the diesel torque for comfortable slow driving and the torque to make you lazily pull the gears but it aint quick is it.
can't see the benefits to be honest? fuel econ doesn't matter in WRC does it? and they have to be above minimum weight anyway so couldnt even say lighter fuel load would be better?

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
Diesel is only good because the car manufacturers have put so muchdevelopment into them, petrol will soon be on its way back up, there was an interesting article on how the are going to make petrol more efficient than diesel, im not sure what the process is called but it involves very high pressure injectors pumping the fuel into a chamber that is at an angle to the side of the combustion chamber and the fuel is pumped away from the cylinder. anyone heard of this? think it came out of a university lab.

Gareth, i am anxiously waiting for a reply from you mate. It has TDi down the side of the car, i was under the impression it run on diesel. If not, then come on, fill me in

Theres a few others such as direct chamber injection, VariableValveTiming+lift and using fancy angles to make the fuel swirl in a way which mixes it very well. I went to an IMechE presintation by Lotus at uni last year, was very cool.
Theres also a system called CAAI which is controled auto ignition for ddddd-diesil engines which looks to remove the NOx emmissions. Though this will not have to large an impact on the car industry, its got massive implications for the shipping industries.

Diesel Engined Road Vehicle
U traditionally have to specify 'road vehichle' as most people are incredulous that you arent referring to some kind of farm machinery or primitive pumping engine

I've seen a video of a chipped STTDCi keeping just ahead of a new focus ST on a drag strip and it was probably getting twice the MPG if not more. And at then fordfair the same STTDCi got a 6.9 to 60 iirc

And "bullshit" that a TDCi was getting "twice the MPG if not more"

I've read several reviews on the system, a few saying there was no noticable step and some saying there was. However I'm sure this will be a develpoment point that VAG will engineer out after the first few thousand cars have been ran for a while. They are only releasing it on two models at the moment, with no hint at SEAT or Audi getting in on the action, and i'm sure this is that they want to prove the system before thye develop larger and smaller versions.
Some company came out with this system a number of years ago, but the lack of control methods made it un-useable as it was all mechanical.
I wasnt saying it was fast, but its 3 times more powerful than my VAG 1.4 and gets the same fuel consumption. The efficency of the engine is one of the highest seen in a road going car yet, and its co2 emmissions are good too (which wont be an issue till 2008/12)
i've not driven one, but i'm sure that the flat torque curve makes it quite drivable.
