How long will a hydraulic tappet last once it has failed?
My runaround Rover 216si has just lost a tappet or two. On start up they are scilent but after a mile they rattle like mad.
Is it going to fail and breakdown on me? Or just make everyone think the car is FUBAR!
Thanks!
Alex - who usually replaces everything but not this time lol

It will just be noisy and stay squashed.
The knockon effect is the valve will not open fully, or at all in some cases.
However, it won't destroy your engine

holding it on the rev limiter usally helps the situation as this will disslodge any blockage in the oil way of the tappet. Or it'll just throw a rod.
Anyways Alex, what was the car in the reflection?!
