[Your Input Required Please] FAO ALL Fast Ford Readers.
Having now come virtually to teh end of 2006 and my first season writing a monthly technical article for Fast Ford magazine i find myself planning next years work and whilst i have quite a few in teh pipeline i hope this time to get some more ideas from the people who matter most: I.E: You.
You all gave me some great ideas 6 months ago and ive run with a few of them, having now just completed my 9th Issue.
I hope that some of you out there are getting something from them, and that i am not boring you all to tears and making you cancel your subscriptions...
So tell me, what would you like to see a technical article about in a 2007 edition of Fast Ford?
ALL Input welcome, even if its to tell me i cant write for toffee and My Articles send you to sleep, or how you would like to see them improve next year.
Thanks in Advance...

Apologies if youve already covered it.....ive been meaning to read, honest
Stu how about a the never ending discusion on comp ratio?
Is that too big of a can of worms
Your professional opinion from both sides ofcourse, high and low comp(forced induction) and maybe a couple of senarios as to what will/wont happen as a result of the chosen ratio.

A change of managment on an s2 is a good idea though Stu or would that be more a feature than a tech guide?

if anything, they are a bit too techy for me to be honest
i love reading them but perhaps a simplified version, an idiots guide to tuning for dummies perhaps, would be on the cards

I think that a feature on why you would fit aftermarket management as opposed to having your standard management system remapped might be good. Also a feature on the future of tuning i.e.when will the likes of secs monitors be replaced by the the types of screens you see on laptops will be a good read.
And a diesel tuning feature is a must!!!!

I often find, when reading the liked of Fast ford etc, that its too much turbo/cosworth orientated.
Possibly some form of N/A tuning would be a good read for alot of people.
Whether it be carbs/cams or whatever.
I'm sure many would be interested, the likes of RS2000 owners,16i owners etc?
Just a thought, other than that though, your doing a spot on job in my opinion!

the other mags such as Retro ford, classic ford are more old school orientated though.
people with them cars won't probably buy all of the mags out there, too expensive to get them all.

i think a few people would like to understand how bosch k(e)-jet mechanical injection works even if they don't know it yet i remember reading the k-jet manual one day when bored and i'm so glad i did

So you need to start buying it to see what he is on about

possibly not really relevant to the readership but I'd like to see one on supercharging and why a fixed displacement blower is not the same as just having a turbo driven by the crankshaft.
(as i just found out! )

It might already have been down, but a article about plenum chambers, there
seems to be so many options i.e swedish,rs500,plenum spacers etc...
Which would be best for what spec etc....
This could also be extended to modded RST ones aswell..

Hi Stu
One of the principal reasons I buy the mags is for the technical sections. As such, I personally would find the following very helpful. I must admit, I havent cross referenced to see if they have been previously done by you or others, so apologies for repeats.
1. The world of Turbochargers
I know that turbos are discussed a lot, but I still feel a definitive article could still be written.
An explaination of how the actually work. Explain how the exhaust and inlet housing size and spec affect the way the turbo performs. Explain properly what creates a laggy/ and a non-laggy turbo charger.
The chat that we had on the rear housing on my turbo was absolutely fascinating. I followed it up with a chat with Turbo Technics, who gave me more info on how it worked (some of which I even understood!!!). (as an aside Stu, they confirmed that replacing the zorst housing would be fine, and would not invalidate my warranty if I bought from them ).
You could even touch on the subject of Volumetric Efficiency, though I suspect that most peoples eyes at this point will just glaze over!
I was also fascinated about your comments on the effect of the exhaust housing on the potential life of a transmission - this in its own right would be very interesting. I had no idea!
Perhaps a pros and cons table with each turbo charger, including a column for target power output. This may help prevent people from buying the wrong turbo (albeit too large or too small).
2. Traction Control
I for one am a fan of some of these kind of aids. Racelogic have one of the better aftermarket versions of it. I think a lot of people are not aware that such aftermarket systems are available, and are in fact very very competent. Also, this could lead to a discussion on launch control.
Perhaps an explaination of how they work, and why they work. Even maybe a demonstration of traction control on versus non traction control round a track in the wet. I wonder which would be faster.
(This may have been done - if so sorry)
3) -50000bhp
Perhaps an article on the way that Break Horse Power is calculated, and what affects the ability of such an engine to create such power.
We have all heard about the standard cosworths on T34 turbos producing 500bhp! Perhaps an explaination as to why this isnt possible.
Also, maybe touch on why torque is more important than power (if it is)
Finally, the importance of weight! What is the point of having a 300bhp cosworth if your stero adds 300kg to the weight?
All I can think of for now - hope this helps
JJ

the whole 5V thing inside the ecu and how different sensors equate the ecu doing different things
i know you've already been through what the sensors measure and what effects they have on one particular bit of the car, but how about putting it onto a map on the page so you can highlight how the different things require different maps
also, real world testing, how you could go into your car without having a machine to do the testing on and see what you could possibly do to identify faults (on most modern cars i know this is a bit tricky but on the older cars it shouldn't be, should it?)
how to map, and what a base map should contain if you are thinking of going to aftermarket manegement
and, on the same note, does aftermarket manwgment require you to put loads of new sensors into your engine bay (the coil pack conversion requiring the rev counter to be rewired for instance)
limitations of standard ford manegement and when it's time to call it quits and move on to something else
and, the one thing that almost everyone who does a 24V conversion is asking, how to wire up the BOB 24V engine into a sierra without losing the stuff you lose by not using the PATS that comes with the original ford ecu (you can run the BOB on BOA manegement but you can't get the secondaries to work apparently which is why no one does this transplant) and the benifits of doing so

I've enjoyed your articles a lot Stu - its one of the main reasons i buy Fast Ford as normally i prefer Performance Ford for its content...
You have an excellent ability to explain things in a way that is neither overly simple or overly complicated.
There are a lot of magazines that talk about induction kits, backboxes and things - but not a lot that are full of deep technical knowledge. Your articles actually go into the topics to the end - a lot of other stuff out there just scratches the surface.
Did you ever think about doing a book at all?

Very kind of you to say so, thanks Will.
I often wonder to myself.. "is it too simplified?" "is it too technical?" "does the reader follow me?" "Have i gone all teh way or missed a bloody great piece out of teh middle?"
Its tricky when your quite up to speed on a subject to put yourself in teh shoes of somebody who isnt but really wants to be... if you follow? (See, there i go again... LOL)
Oddly enough, yes, i have actually been approched by a publisher of automotive books and asked to do a book, but i just dont have the time to take on such a mammoth project at this time. maybe when i am more settled in teh unit with some new staff, something else i have to sort out in the new year as Nick has moved onto pastures new.

Stu - if you really wanted to do something to help us all, do the one thing i've wanted for years...
Make an interactive piece of software for people to learn more about mapping...
Things like faulty sensors making it misbehave, too much advance creating cracks of det etc.
Not so much a game - just an interactive piece of education type software
