Surprisingly the Focus RS beats the competition out in a time of 1:33.8.

I test drove the RS and ST back to back and bought the RS which was a used car when I could easily have bought the new ST.

Info from Top Gear site and wikipedia.
And just to start a war again, the FRS was about 2 secs slower than the M3.

Same boat as you, could have gone for a brand new ST, went for a used RS.

Defo FRS Jay. I owned one last year year mate.
Really nice car & handling was incredible.
Had a test drive in a ST, again was a nice car, but seemed too big
Also thought the grills looked cheap & tacky, big thick chunky grey plastic.
Too many ST`s around too....

I bought a new orange ST only a couple of months ago and been on the phone today to JCT28 enqiuring about an RS. Don't get me wrong the ST is a great car but a bit 'too nice' to drive, especially having owned an Esco Cossie before this.
Trying to persuade the wife right now that an RS is the way forward. Hopefully in the long run too as I would imagine the value will hold better. Plus if I do p/ex I get a bit cash for xmas too. Everyone's a winner.
Opions please!!! (just to help convince the wife)

I bought my FRS 2months ago. I also test drove the ST, it was nice, felt smooth and quick but it didn't feel like the beast the RS is.

I use it everyday and have had no problems, its heavy on petrol when you boot it but good when you dont. The ride is hard and you get alot of road noise, but it handles like nothing i've ever drove or been in before.

ST -boys car
RS - Mans car

Just tonight i had a play with an ST, my RS is standard and i was still 2 car lengths infront off the mark.

I must say I love my RS, use it as my everyday car and recommend it to anyone but I've not driven the ST so I can't comment on how good or bad it is. The other point is that I see quite a few ST's over a week but go for weeks without seeing another RS on the road - so if you want a bit of exclusivity...

Anyway, as for the time round the Ring, I can't remember where I originally got this from but:

"For all who believed that the new ST is 14 seconds faster on the Nurburgring...they where talking about the ST170!

The Ford guys never said "faster than the RS", they wrote "faster than its precursor"; it seems a few journalist misinterpreted that phrase"

Here are the official times:
Focus ST 170 9:05
Focus ST 220 8:51
Focus RS 8:36"

so it is - dunno where all of these things come from. Ah well.

Interesting that on all of the short track tests done by 5th gear, Top Gear and the mags that the RS wins, must be the long straights where the ST gains an advantage

Top cars would own one if i had the cash.

Handling is amazing just as good as the dc2 itr i owned for 18months, but lots more fun to drive. Would be a nice everyday car aswell.

I know with just and exhaust and a chip they go very well. Add a manifold and go even better!

I disagree, I owned a 44000 mile s2 that had no expense spared on it and I can say in no way shape or form can you even compare it against the Focus ST or RS. Throw any corners into the equation and its game over for the RST. I can take a certain bend over here 45mph faster in the Focus RS than I could in my RST. The RST was a decent car in its day, but its been and gone now.

I would never take the gift of any RST over the Focus RS even if its a 400bhp RST. I am also glad that the Focus RS is not as lairy as an Escort Cosworth as in these thieving times you cant be to safe and dont want to stand out that much.

A thing the pic of the Focus RS never show is how wide it is compared to the normal Focus.

I had a S1 RST years ago, and my Pug 205 GTI 1.9 pissed all over it in every respect, dunno how you can say a S2 RST feels better than a FRS??

And looks wise, I think the FRS makes an Escos look prehistoric.

If ya want a family car go for da ST but RS will win hands down looks 110% betta nd will keep their price betta! look at the ST3 £21k to buy new 6months down da line cn pick em up £16-17k.
ive raced an ST one of my m8ts has one nd i won (both have similar bhp/modifications!)

The ST is a lot smoother though and better built so surely it will feel slower as many have said. What feels quicker and what are faster are two different things.

Talking purely car for car and not any of the RS badge or rarity crap then i would take the ST anyday.

Fastford quotes vertially the same 0-60 and the ST as a faster top speed. How many will drive these cars on the track more than road anyway!

You would have the ST based on what?

Have you driven either?

Quoting top speeds is as relevant as questioning track use. I've tracked my RS twice in a year, and had it flat out once, and that wasn't on a track. It's nigh on impossible to drive at those sort of speeds these days on the roads, unless you like prison.

What does jumped in mean? You sat in it and went "brumm brummmmm"? Did you actualy drive it?

Have you driven a normal 2.0l focus and a ST170 focus and then the RS Focus ? You would certainly know the difference in the FRS compaired to the other Focus's listed above and then take the 3 Focus's on track and you will completely understand the difference between them (i know i do between my ST170 and my FRS )

Have to say tho on track with my RST with a few suspension mods felt like it turned in better and had a better feel on the exit a corner than my std FRS does but the FRS carries far more speed into, through and out of the corner but doesnt give the driver the feel i used to get with the RST.

On the road you can go stupidly quick with a FRS through corners and keep flat on the throttle in places where my RST would have to have a lift and brake to take the same corners. The FRS has better feel and confidence on the road compaired to my old RST that i wouldnt go back

I loved my FRS and really rated it

Also really rate the ST (my mum has one) but its deffo less extreme then the RS in terms of driving experience

If i had the choice I'd like the FRS but with the ST3 interior as the FRS interior was embrassingly boy racer

Put small load of cash into the FRS to eat up some of the 100bhp it lacks compared to M3 and im shure it would be an even game.

Your other post lead me and others to believe you where comparing it against an RST. The RS Focus is far different than any other focus I can assure. I have owned both models and have a new 2006 version as well.

No disrepect but if you thought the Focus RS was average how could you go back to driving the RST. As I said my RST had no expense spared on it and it was terrible to drive especially compared to any modern car.

Chipped. decatted, fat zorst and a K&N and it's not far off now, i've tried it. 90-140+ nowt in it.

Asbestos suit on, here we go again.
