Default Customs tax on imported parts?

Ive recently bought some secondhand car bits from America (bout $200 in value) and just got a letter from parcel force worldwide saying they are holding it until I pay £23.05 in VAT and £8.00 clearance fee. Does anyone know where I stand on this as I thought been a private buyer (note also private seller, not a company) and been secondhand goods I wouldnt have to pay any tax on it. Also what costs £8 for it to be released? Anyone been in the same boat?

your screwed basically
the £23.05 is import VAT and it is payable on everything that is imported in to UK (sometimes gifts are excluded!) also you pay import VAT on the shipping charges as well.

The £8-00 is what parcel force and most of the other courier companies charge to submit the information to HM Customs and Excise.

In short, if you dont pay them, you will not get your parts

Hope this helps

It dont matter if the parts are new or secondhand you are still liable to pay tax on them

I think it depends how the sender declares the goods

I have bought numerous times from the USA (two different suppliers) and never had a problem or been charged any extra.

I am awaiting some stuff from Aus - just hope I am lucky this time ...
