Default Engine porn

Might interest some, especially some of the nice engineering like the squirters and the girdle etc, a copy of a thread about the engine in the calibra my mrs has just bought.

It will be running a T38, on tubular stainless manifold etc now, with a dose of nitrous on top anda different inlet, so slightly different spec now.
I expect the transmission to fall out the first time she uses it in anger, LOL

By mate mate Matt, who she bought it off:

Whole point of stripping the block back to nothing AGAIN - were to add some under piston cooling jets.

These were bought from Autovaux and are from the diesel 1.7 lump (cheers chip )

Now personally not totally convinced about this mod and how regal/wallace tend to do it with drilling the shell. So nicked chips mod..........

Handed the block to a mate who's a CNC machinist (Luke) and using some fancy milling machine - he milled out a 3mm deep channel to the dead centre of the bearing tunnel, then punched the exact point at which we needed to drill.

Then took the block around Will_Kirbys and using his piller drill we drilled through at 20 degrees. Once this were complete Will added the jets. (had a 2 thou clearance either side of the jet so a VERY snug fit)

Here's Chris Reays girdle he made up for us - will show more on this when it's properly being added.

Je pistons & forged steel rods

polished and balanced Crank & fly

Helix 6 paddle :-

Z'Let oil pump, flows 30% more than the C'let and has steel ring gears.

Modified Frontera pickup pipe, just measuring up - but need me baffle plate to size it up proper before finally welding it.

We had a dry run first with the Girdle as to make sure everything aligned etc.... So we torqued the crank in and spun by hand (totally fine) then again with the girdle torqued down...It were spot on - spun totally freely, so I were more than happy to take it apart and build up again only this time lubing etc...

I am just awaiting the pickup pipe to be welded and I can bolt the sump on

Whilst I were on a roll - I thought I'd strip the head down -

Early Coscast Head, ported and polished by QED with 11mm Bronze valve guides.

Some porting

And some more

New magnesium alloy caps and steel platforms

Double springs

Just checked the clearance of the pickup nozzle

Then place the sump back on with plenty of sealant !! lol

New 1mm oversized inlet valves from QED - wasted stem

And again but on the exhaust

Valve seats been cut - then I used fine paste to lap them in

I had (on chips very good advice ) the exhaust seats cut with a "thicker" cut.

You can see on the left hand side the seat thats been lapped (with the dark ring in the middle) and the right hand side no done

Now I need to check the face is flat then put the rest back in and give the face a good clean.

Steveboyslim head studs

Almost totally built back up

Had the tails of the chargecooler adapted to 2.5"

Another pic of the car.............

Quarky little adapter from Aquamist (still on trial - so "testing" for them)........Wizards of NOS have had theres out since day one lmao

Basically it allows to fit both jets into a rubber/silicone hose with a tight fit not to allow a leak....

Tophat arrived

Already chopped the end off which is 50mm ID - this is now 60mm ID

Also measured the new pipework - this is now ready for the welder.

Pic of the nitrous/Water injection pump/solenoids and the jetting - in an ideal world the nitrous lines would be a little shorter.... might feck about with that tomorrow...

Wont be competitive anywhere mate, cause if it went to TOTB it would be racing the liners and evos, due to being 4wd.

I did the squirters for Robs (his was the engine i used as an example when i showed how to do them in total vauxhall magazine recently) but he hasnt got the girdle as the early blocks dont have the location points for it.

Is the girdle a 'factory fit' on later engines ?

There is a girdle on the Z20 series of engine (this is a Z block not a C'LET one) but its NOT a girld like this one, its much more puny.

... and the purpose of a girdle?

I presume just to add strength to the bottom end assembly? Not seen one before......

Nice! Chargetemps are NOT going to be an issue on that car now I take it

Big intercooler, Chargecooler, Water injection, NOS....

Excellent, looks capable of serious results. What management will power it up Chip?

Those jets remind me, did the ones we talked about do the job you wanted ok?

Jesus, so Matt spent all that time and effort on the car / engine and then bailed it to you / Cally?

Did he just loose interest in it?

He was after a Cossie inlet plenum (outer case), did you still need this to finish it off?

Love the engineering . All Lee needs to do is look at this post and see what he HASN'T done to find the restriction in his .

Stu, these are the ones you told me about years ago, been using them ever since, only slight change ive done (and matt here) from how others install them is to supply oil behind the bearing, rather than a drill a hole in the bearing to get the oil back out again, as i was worried that may partially starve the bearing, where as this way it cant.

Its not on management at the moment at all (he sold that seperately, along with the turbo and manifold etc) but im going to put it back on motronic initially and try my luck on just an uprated chipset to begin with (closely monitored!) as cally doesnt have the spare cash for anything else. Unless you do good deals on custom remapping when its for a mag writeup

Its going together with a T38 and tubular manifold and 3" exhaust:

And its going onto a new inlet manifold idea that ive had which a company are starting making, hopefully should arrive this week and i will stick some pictures up of it

No chargecooler now, i dont believe that it needs one and i think it may have been a bit restrictive to flow with the one matt had.

But yeah, charge temps should be well under control

Steve.

It will help to elminate movement of the bearing tunnel which in turn stops the massive loads you can get on the block from the crank when that happens, if Rod Tarry had been able to fit something like this on his block, i suspect it would still be in one piece.

Well, it doesnt have a ford badge, so the odds are good

Hopefully wont get any major failures, but no doubt there will be a few teething niggles to begin with, everything I suggested matt do with the engine though, and that he has done off his own back too (girdle, steel internals, cooling jets, higher flow oil pump, plenty of cooling, magnesium caps etc) are ALL for no reason other than to add reliability, not one of those things actually adds much in the way of power as such, they just try and hold it in place better and keep temps sensible etc.

Time will tell though, but she has a transit van to drive fow work anyway, and a cavalier if she needs 4 seats, so this car is only a toy anyhow for her, so if it breaks down, it will only be when she is out for a blast, not on her way to work anyway.

Opps, missed that post.

No i dont need the swedish plenum, im doing mine differently, will post pics when its done.

He kind of lost interest in it, but i think it was more a case of realising he had spent too much on it and wanting to stop doing so, 27 and still living at home with his parents etc.

Mind you, he was from norfolk, most people down that way are pretty fucking weird, so you wouldnt expect any logic surely?

That must have been his early plans then, cause he was on about using an R&B swedish one the last time i spoke to him about engine specs before he decided to break it.
