Default Rover 820 Vitesse Turbo

Anyone had any experiance of these? A mate has one and is looking to get rid of.....

I've only ever heard of the 600 Turbo tho

Now i know its a Rover, so lets avoid the usual responces! I just want information on the engine/turbo and what the hell a Rover 800 is like

I'm guessing its going to be a tank

Just check you get the 200BHP model and not the 180.

They mark there terratory like a dog in regards to leaking oil. Check for head gasket weap at the front right of the engine.

the 600 uses coil pack

220/400/800 uses dizzy

carnt remember which model but one of them does have shit pistons

usual thing is headgasket, they always leak on passenger side front corner

can get a metal headgaslet for them though used be rover but god knows where now lol

later models had metal gasket as std

other than that good cars looked after will be reliable

that one uses a m series turbo engine, very rae and a better engine

they changed it to the t series which is in all turbo rover cars

FYI 200PS Model has lower suspension. Bigger 17" Wheels.

The Cams are the key and pulleys should be stamped up as
100029 inlet cam and a 100028 exhaust iirc

If its an R Reg it will be a 200bhp (197) model.

I had an M Reg one - i actually liked it, and the seats were the proper recaro's, not the crapper ones found in the 600 Ti (which i have). Some of the 800 Vitesse's have full leather, these are often knows as Vitesse Lux.

The gearboxes are made out of softer chocolate than Scooby engines Rover limited the boost in first gear to save the box. this can be got around to make 1st more lively. two much wheel spinning is bad for them.

They have a tall 5th gear, good for cruising.

It should already have the Klinger (metal) head gasket on it with it being an R reg.

Pre 96 cars were either Vitesse or Vitesse Sport (the sport had 17" alloys etc)

The post 96 cars had the crapper AE pistons iirc. but tbh, run less than 13psi and all should be well.

also dont let the alarm fob battery go dead as this does the immobilsor

if it resets the ecu when the car batt is dead aswell have fun

no more than 13 psi as stated 12 to be safe as the ecu carnt fuel for that much boost

also they have no tdc markings on bottom pulley to do a cambelt, theres a locating pin in flywheel but ive seen people do it with he pin but 180 degress out aswell

So overall, if i stick to running the 12-13psi......... Are they fairly reliable cars?

Any niggles or typical Rover things i should look out for?

I got a rover 220 gti for Ł60 notes last winter as a run about, cos it needed a new gearbox fitted, which was in the boot! Got a set g-max suspension from a breaker for Ł50, a stainless exhaust from a breaker
and a decat and filter of my old man, oh and a stainless scorpion exhaust had about Ł250 in it, nailed it everywhere and I MEAN NAILED IT, blew a golf gti 16v and an imprezza turbo on the back roads thru handlin, its not always horsepower, just grunt and balls. Wish i had it this winter lol, hmm

They weren't a bad car in their day. Lancashire Police had them as their Armed Response Vehciles, blew a few engines in them simply by selecting the wrong gear

Handling was the main problem with them though - good on the Motorways but shoite on the back roads!

check for noises from the gearbox when the clutch isnt pressed. Have a look underneath, oil dripping from the drive shaft seals is a dead giveaway for the usual diff bearing problems. If it has a genuine turbo box fitted it will be a TorSen btw.

Little bit of oil weeping from the corner of the block is no big deal.

The pre and after 96 piston thing is a load of shite, they are all weak appart from the mk1 800 pistons (m series). Run no more than 12.5psi and good times should be had by all

i have an stearling as a run around, anyone know how to reset the bloody SRS light on the dash

the 800 is a comfy car and eats the Mway, far more relaxing than the cossie to drive but mine is the 2.7 V6 auto. Had a T series in my old 420 GSi love that car and they do catch people out when the Torsen doesnt shit it self

i have a rover 620ti engine in my maestro.
twin cam,fuel injection,stage 2 t25 turbo,dyno`ed at 260bhp
bit of a monster in the maestro.
it runs an omex ecu (needed if you wanna run good power)
uprated steel caged bearings in the box type b torsen diff (better than the older type a torsen)

they are very under rated cars, just dear to get power out of

no way

what happened to the riguard seats

he had them specially made as these were what were used in the maestro cup trpohy cars

the cage finished the car i think

makes people a bit more suspious when they see a maestro with a full cage

They are big cars yes, but they do move. manual is a must. all late rovers are dissy less twin coil pack. think it was 1996+. not many 800 vitesse had LSD's. you may be lucky. All rover turbo's have a over boost Valve as standard, Under the airbox. Wouldn't run anymore than 12psi on it.
