Default Ok, you've got £5k in your pocket for a new car...

and its a choice between.

E36 M3
Scooby
Sapph Cossie (just cos its a Ford site )
Evo 3
Merc 230 Kompressor

What would you go for and why? I have my own idea, but not 100% sure why, as i do find all the other cars have good qualities about them, but bad as well.

Discuss, but please, and i no its hard, be sensible. if you find you are going to post something silly etc, sit on your hands

BMW M3 without a shadow of a doubt.

MR2 is a good shout, as you can buy a nice one for that money, but the M3 is by far the better all rounder.

As for the Alfa, ROFL.......

Just don't like em!

I get to work on a huge range of cars in my jobs and from taking em apart and putting em back together, you get a feel for what is built well and what isn't...

Personally, I feel that most Sierra's are built better than most Alfa's! And thats saying something!

Same with Beemers, namely 3 series. I wouldn't buy an E36 3 series - I'd buy an E46 tho. The E36 is a suffer terrible build quality - 99% of them (no exagerration(sp) ) are awfully put together! Bits do not fit, wear badly, never go back together like you know they should, or would expect for a "higher prestiege of car", whereas, on the other hand, the E46 - I have NEVER found a bad one yet, and that is everything from the base model to the M3 CSL. Every single one I have worked on (gotta be in the hundreds now) has been absolutely spot on in terms of build quality. Take saomething off? Snaps back into place and no sign it was ever off. Perfect fit everytime.

Not at all true. There is a GTV V6 sat outside the window I'm looking out of right now.

The car looks amazing. Standard equipment is awesome - 17s, Brembos, etc. The interior is awesome. Full leather, with a dash that looks spectacular. The engine - wow! One of the best sounding engines of all time!

Car handles pretty well and goes very well indeed. Even EVO called it "a mini-Ferrari".

However, the build quality is not good. Bushes get knocked out really quickly, and pretty much every nut and bolt I've undone has been rusty/seized. Working on anything under the engine bay is a pain in the arse, and when they go wrong, it's inevitable that it will cost.

Changing the brakes involved replacing the calipers as they'd partially siezed... and that's quite common. Loads of other niggles, but when they are working well, they are quite something.....

Got one for sale if you want it

a quick, reliable car is the requirement.

my own opinion was/is M3, but until i've driven one, i'll reserve judgement.

The only car i've driven out of my list is the Sapph Cossie - so any offers?

i've NEVER seen an EVO 4 for that money, let alone an EVO 5!!

My dad bought a brand new Alfa 33 Twinspark with factory fitted Veloce bodykit.
Biggest peice of shit he ever owned!
More went wrong with it in the the first year than all of his other cars put together

The built and quality of it has put me off Alfas for life, and anyone that thinks its not true, then doesnt the depreciation of them put you off?!
Spend 5k on an Alfa and see what its worth in 2 years

out of the choices you have listed i'd agree with the majority and say m3, but ive never driven any of them.

evo 5 for 5k is a bit unlikely i reckon, unless its a nail.

im also in the "i hate alpha gang" they just never made one i like the look of

i was recently looking, you can get a decent M3 for 5k, bute y7oure more likely to look at average ones with low mileage at that price

if you had 6k you'd likely get a better car

Out of those if it was to be used as a daily car I would have to say the M3. Which is surprising as I fucking hate the things.

Audi S4 would be my first choice but I don't think you'll get one for £5k

but you will get a 2.7 a6, which is simply a de-tuned s4 in a bigger shell.

Quick Reply: Ok, you've got £5k in your pocket for a new car...
