Fitting a Autronic on one in to weeks and have had some in also, it is a very big very heavy car made for the USA market and very expensive to maintain.

Looked into one ages ago - cheap stylish car, but as above -heavy and expensive.

Never seem to be that quick for the power, and also apparently very expensive to insure.

Do look smart though...

i don't like toyotas because they were cheating bast@rd's
in the wrc in the middle 90's,but a mate had a mr2 turbo earlier this year,
straight off the boat from japan, and he took me for a hot lap
around ellesmere port,it was a very fast competant car.
not my bag but handled and went nice

Id go for the MR2 turbo out of the two. My mate used to have a GTO and it was so expensive to run. Not just fuel, but stuff like sensors were really expensive!!! About Ł300 ish for some. It wasnt very reliable either, although that obviously depends on the car.

I would have thoght the MR2 would be a bit faster too, especially if you go for a later one or a mildly modded example.

Trev - I've got an MR2 Turbo.

What do you want to know?

Cheap performance car? Absolutely. Really nice to drive. Superb mid engined chassis, seriously fun even as standard.

Can be made to go very well indeed. My one is probably stage 1 cossie quick, but it'll hammer a stage 1 cossie on track.

Plenty available for them on the aftermarket, although as you would expect, they aren't really a "work on it yourself" type car unless you fancy swearing a lot!

When you do have to do jobs on them, they are a doddle in the main. Set of front brake pads - Ł20 and 10 mins to fit.

The knowledge base sections on IMOC and MR2OC have a wealth of information. Worth a browse, and if you have any questions, ask away....

I agree with the Ponmesiter..

I had one for a few months last year to potter about in- my mates car to drive while he wasn't using it..

I thought it was quite good fun really..... but working on it was a bastard.. felt like I needed a ladder everytime I opened the engine compartment.

get the mr-2 loads better from what ive heard

smaller and lighter car + GTO go wrong alot apparently and mr2's looks so damn good a mate used to own most deffinetly the cleanest mr2 NA around no OTT mods just things like full leather re-trim and full respray in the original colour then some choice engine mods was a truely beautiful car...............so dont go mollestering them with body kits and rubbish

3000GTs are WANK.

Heavy, ugly, hard to work on, and poo performing mainly cause of the weight.

MR2 turbos are great cars.

I REALLY dont like the standard looks, but can be made to look great, and performance wise, they fantastic.

Great feeling gearchange too, brilliant infact.

We have had a 320bhp one at work for the last few weeks, and ive done a good 500miles in it myself. Fookin goes some, but i think id prefer it with 400bhp, jus feels like it can take the power too easy, lol. But thats a good thing.

Sooo much faster than one on std boost as I tried that
But soooo much slower than one running a GT30R at 2bar, as I tried that too

As per all road cars, unless on the power, even tho the engines in the back, it understeeeeeeeeeeer at the limit.
Never realised on the road, but I took it to the limits and then some on an airfield, and yes, thats the case.
One the power tho and it oversteer all the way mind

Think Renton had 150 out of it the other day too

Jake
i have noticed with them that the arse end is higher than the front and
standard they have higher profile tyres on the back
i think the engine is sort of a celica gt4 motor my mate reckoned

The engine is the same as the GT4 motor.

Good for over 600bhp without major problems.

Very true - standard the look very wrong, but with some subtle body additions, nice set of wheels:

That looks swwet.

i had a MR2 last year just a N/A REV2 but handling was good and there fun to drive. Bit noisey though as the engine is behind ur head. 3sgte engine same as in GT4 go for a REV2 or REV3 as they came with better brakes and the REV3 had better suspension from standard and added side impact bars (i think) also look better with the round rear lights dont look as dated. REV3 came out on late L plates i think. also the rev1's are bout 220bhp and the rev3's are bout 245bhp (i think) also the rev3 has an easer ECU to work on apprently (just what ive read)

Hmmm, worth investigating I reckon. I know what you mean about noise from behind, I had a VX220 a while ago and when on the motorway there was no point having a stereo.

I'm re-building a mate's 2nd gen mr2 turbo in my garage at the mo',
After 3000kms he holed a JE piston and totally junked the cyl. head 'cos of detonation.
Wheel bearings often go as do rear brake disks due possibly to the fact that the engine is at the rear.
Crankshaft pulleys can sieze onto the end of the crank causing untold grief..
I often find the main and shell bearings damaged along with the crankshaft big ends being scored,as also the crank thrust washers, oil too thin maybe?.
Always inspect the small turbo cooling pipe that's under the turbo as with the
turbo in situ. it's a bastid to change.
Engine removal is quite easy using 1 jack with no need for a crane.
Valve guide oil stem seals are colour coded and must not be mixed
up and changing the timing belt is 'challenging' with the engine in situ.
If you have to change the timing belt tensioner(hydraulic affair) use a small allen
key to lock the steel pin in place 'cos if you use a drill tip, nail, bent bit of wire etc
it WILL snap causing you even more work...
Watch out if using the O/E Toyota workshop bible as the torque settings are printed in KG-csquared as opposed to the CDs you can buy off eBay that include the more common ib/ft,NM.
HTH,cheers.

3000 GTO's are fucking shit, slow, heavy, ugly and fucking expensive to put right, make cossie and skyline tax look like freebies . Mate gets quite a few of them through his place as he does lots of SVA preps for some jap import garages, and you can bet your bottom dollar they are fucked, hence the japs selling them so cheap!!

MR2 Turbos are great cars IMHO, cheap and relativly bombproof, and fairly quick, and easy to get bits for. Only thing I don't really like is the HUGE transmission tunnel and your left arm being nearly at shoulder hight to chance gear

Other car I would have a look at if you want somthing Jap is a Supra TT, great cars and the engines are monsters!

my cousins kid got one the other month after looking at a few skylines etc
it was only 5k and it had all the trimmings, plus it was cheaper for him to insure (he's only 25) than the equivalent skyline was

got a problem with the seats though as they are supposed to move to support you more when you floor it, but al it seems to do is blow a fluse

but other than that he's a very happy chappie, a lot of motor for not a lot of cash

I've always fancied one of the supercharged mk1s.

Probably too old and rusty (and rare) to come into contention though.

Ive got a celica gt4 185 which has the same engine as the mr2 turbo, the 3s-gte.
Bloody hell its reliable, my car gets spanked everywhere it goes and its still going strong.
On standard power they arent to clever, but remove the boost retriction in 1st and 2nd gear, and get the boost turned upto 1 bar and there really do go.

I've had an MR2 Turbo. Much better car than the 3000GT. And it's ultra reliable, fast, handles well enough. Looks nice. Can't really think of a bad point. Apart from doing maintainance, as the engine is a bit tight. As they hardly ever break down, I wasn't in there much anyways so not really an issue for me.

The very reason Fensport themselves run a TRD supplied block, as they kept breaking Toyota blocks.....I guess the Toyota block is as good as a 99
The standard ones are very unreliable, and those cars, both MR2, and GT4 are a total nightmare to work on.

GTO's arent much easier either.

I'd avoid both like the plague.
