Putting costs aside I would like any of the following for blasting round the road rallies:

106 GTi/Rallye
Mk1/Mk2 Golf GTi
Clio 182 trophy
205 GTi

Then to a slightly larger hatch extent you have:
Focus RS
Escort RS Turbo
Megane Trophy
Escort Cosworth

But I don't think they fall into the same category really!!

6.6 to 60mph an rear wheel drive, an out before the mk1 gti,
So it may have started the hot hatch idea,

but that black gt turbo 2 with all the spots looks mean as!!

saxo vtr.................. only joking

205 gti 1.9 in red with black half leather
Closely followed by mk1 & 2 golfs,
R5 GTT,
unos,
series 1s
Mk1 astra gte,
Mk1 XR2
I could go on for ages. Unfortunately I was too young at the time to really appreciate the scene (other than to stare at my neighbours 1990 205 when I was 9!) and when I was old enough to drive the insurance was too expensive!

309 1.9 gti.

In its day, arguably one of the best handling front wheel drive cars.

Correct!!!!!!!

Owned one for a couple of years back in the early 90's, handling was so much better than the 205, really superb. Only got rid because it was a bit "fragile" to say the least.

although a tiny bit newer than whats previously been mentioned, i had a fiesta xr2i for a little while and i felt that was a superb little all rounder, handling, acceleration, top end, whether it be flying down the a12, or hacking round the back country lanes it always suprised u and put a little smile on ya face at how well it coped at times

I loved my astra GTE 16v mk2, absolutly indestructable, even i didn't manage to break it , fast as fuck as well, used to rev like a motorbike , uno turbos are ace, as are R5 GTT's, don't know if escort cossies count as hot hatches but after driving home tonight at 3am on empty roads, I would say I love my T25 escos most of all

How many of you who've said the 205 GTi to be your favourite have also owned/had a go in a Clio Williams?? I've had both, a Williams and a 1.9 GTi and the Williams wins hands down for me on both performance and handling!!

Was it the 309 that came with the Mi16 in Europe? (while we got the 8V)

I have to go with the Maestro turbo as it was so under rated (except by joy riders ) 0-60 in 6.9ish standard from a 150bhp FWD

That and/or the Gtir.

My mate had a 1.6 Vanden Plas Maestro. It went alright but the thing was posessed or something - if you indicated left when you had the headlights on the passenger window would go down. The fuel computer would count the amount of fuel left in the tank up and not down (!!!!!!!) and it looked like the tin worm had waged armageddon on it! Digital dash was pretty mad and the talking computer was sooooo irritating!

For me has to be the Mk1 Clio 172 i had one and it went and handled amazingly well, went round rondabouts on three wheels. Wouldn't mind a S1 106 Rallye either they're ment to be the bollocks.
