as far as I'm aware, they can date it from expiry of the old one, especially if it's within a week or two, but you might like to wait for further confirmation.

You write to the manufacturere of the engine and get conformation of the year the engine was first fitted from the eng.number, or if you have v5 with eng number on that will do.
I'm waitjng for the letter from Ford USA for my 1988 engine in year 2000 car,.

As has already been said MOT is on whichever is the oldest, engine or car.
