Default Buying A Sapphire Shell - Where Do They Tend To Rot?

Gents,

As per topic. I am looking at a Sapphire shell tomorrow, with a view to building a track car. Does anyone know of any common places to check for rot?

Cheers

True, Cosworth shells rot more from being binned into trees/fances/other cars twice as often as the standard Saph shell

I'd maybe get one already prepared. I think ATM had an orange ex racecar that had a cage for sale?

Definitely get one pre-prepared.

If it's a rally/race car, the outside wont be all that nice, but it'll sound where it matters.

Getting a shell prepped ready for the track is a costly exercise if you want it done properly, so buying one ready done saves all the hassle and heartache.

Otherwise, standard shells rust in the following places:

Seat mounting

Transmission tunnel (often from failed heater matrix)

Sills inside the car:

On the outside:

Chassis rails:

Spring cup mounts:

Arches:

... and obviously the outer sills, which usually hide lots of rust beneath the sideskirts out of view.

Unsurprisingly, most rust is located towards the rear of the vehicle, as the old Cosworth engines tend to kick out enough oil to keep the front fairly fresh!

Check out my old track car build for a good way to build a track saff. My track shell wan't all that pretty on the outside, but structurally it was sound, and already came with certain track luxuries, like it being seam welded, double skinned footwells, pedal box firewall mounts, MSA approved cage, hydraulic handbrake, mounts for 9" diff/compression struts, and bladed ARBs, fuel cell in the boot, firewall etc etc......

How are you anyway mate?
