Importing From Australia.
Anyone done it ? Is the risk of import / customs tax the same as from the USA ?

What you trying to import? If it's small then import as a "present" and no tax, if it's a car there are lots of things to look at......... 
Oh and if it is a car, try New Zealand as it's a VERY good exchange rate just now
, apart from if like me you are earning NZD
