anyone get new car envy??
i constantly think about changing my car
dont get me wrong, i love driving it, and its great, reliable, powerfull.
its just everytime i go in a newer car i think about it.
my relatives have audi's, which are so nice and refined in comparison to the saff, and i always borrow my mums focus which is fantastic to drive.
i find with my saff i get the paranoia that if i boot it everywhere, things will start to break. and am wondering if i was to trade up to a more 'refined' car this paranoia may go away.
was thinking maybe a V8 engined salloon, or a Audi sports model such as a S4 or S6
help me please, or just tell me what you think
cheers

i know exactly what your sayin mate. i think of how much my rs turbo stands me in at the moment and how much more money it will require in the future and i think of how i could have got a nice late e36 bmw 328 coupe or summit. but then it only takes one passion ford meet down the sea front and know why i carry on with my old turbo

im paranoid due to bad engine builders in the past and having spent so muchmoney
no matter what you drive, you abuse it, IT WILL break lol
Thank god for a warranty with new motors tho
why not buy a newish car for everyday use and enjoy the saff more at the weekends ifyou can afford it
you want a brand spanker or a few yr old car?

people may think it sounds shit but i think it would look nice
and by no personality i mean they have no sense of fun in them, no quirky little features like the squeak from my centre console, if that ever gets fixed i would be upset so thats why i dont fix it and if it annoys me i turn the radio up

cheers for the info guys
dont get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with my saff, anyone who's seen it will tell you its a minter
i'm just wondring if i could have as much fun in say an S4 of similar power, and not have the paranoia of it breaking, or someone wanting to steal it
maybe i should take my car out at the weekend, as i really dont drive it enough

I'd rather keep my 20 year old Sierra, Can't get my head round the depreciation on new/newer cars, I bought a brand new Combo for work 2 1/2 year ago for Ł8k +vat it is now worth less then half of the original purchase price

i know the feeling Rory, we have an escort gti for a run-a-round, its great, half leather, air-con, power steering etc & drives so much easier, i keep thinking of getting a new focus ST, i may consider selling the escos late next year & getting something new.

I'm looking for another car every day
Love the FRS and the 3 door but in my head those little voices keep coming up with so many other suggestions
"Why don't you sell them both and get an M3 to use everyday?"
"A new STI would be nice wouldn't it?"
"Or what about an Evo 6? You always liked those..."
"Just buy a sensible diesel!"
"An RS4 would be great... Nice to drive, lot's of space, ..."
"Sell the 3 door and get your old 4 door back! You know you want it!"
Must resist

New cars are the way forward every time.
Even slightly older cars are better.
Take my brother's new car -just bought a BMW M Coupe. 320bhp, straight six.
Isn't the most powerful car in the world... in fact, it's less powerful than his old saff cossie, but my word, does it drive nice.
It's quicker than his cossie, more refined, more comfortable, more fun to drive, handles better, looks nicer, has more class etc etc etc
The ONLY thing that keeps people in old cars like cossies and RS Turbos is either the car scene itself, or the cheap performance. Once that novelty has worn off, or if you like the idea of a sportscar, or a car you can use without the image, then you end up leaving the modified car scene behind.
I am so glad I put it all behind me. It's going to be a nice comfy everydayer, and I'm saving to go racing next year.

The M3 is probably the most complete car on the market.
It does EVERYTHING well. There isn't really any reason someone who loves performance cars shouldn't apsire to own one at some point.

cant belive your on a passion ford sayin they're cheap performance..... have you ever run a cosworth? and not a shed, a good solid engine with serious power could cost well over ten grand even more
if a cosworth isnt a sports car then a 320cisedi probably is the mother of all sports cars huh... driving fast cars is a passion and a need for alot of people and novilties as you say will never wear off!
people want cars for different reasons, some like to pose and use cars as a status and class thing.

Interesting thread, i see exactly where you are comming from ginge, and agree. i work at a ford garage and drive new/nearly new fords everyday and as of yet i haven't got in one and thought, "cor i wish i could buy this"
Obviously i haven't driven the ST/RS yet and then my opinion will most likely change, although as said depreciation, a Ł20k ST3 will most likely be mega relaible, fast and excellent to drive but three years time what it gonna be worth? 15k? thats alot of money imho to loose just for having a new car on the drive. I'd rather spend Ł20k on something genuinely fast, lotus carlton for example, which in three years time you'll almost certianly get the same money for it.
Something that makes me smile is poeple who pay 12k on a brand new mondeo, three years it'll be worth what? Ł5k if that? and it'll still be left standing by almost every performance car from 20 years ago, 205 gti, rsturbo etc.
I'd rather have a old fast car than a new slow car! - If i had the money for a new fast car [911 turbo] then thats a different story....

your all right , i work for a vauxhall dealer ( sorry !!! ) i drive new cars all day there not that much more reliable its just that the warranty pays when they go wrong, unless there played with, then you pay anyway !
i love the astra VXR top car but still not as fun to drive as me cos, the first time i took a vectra VXR (2.8V6 Turbo 260 BHP )for a thrash i thought i left the hand brake on !!! was boring to drive but the speedo moved like hell, just had no feel to it. even the monaro ( 6L V8 400BHP ) and my cos still would have left it standing and there 35K !!!!
older car have a feel to them, you know whats going on. not feeling wraped up in a 30k sofa with an engine!!!
i use the cos for summer fun and drive an old omega to tow the cos on a trailer to shows, best way in my opinion.
if you can afford to do this, do it
you wont look back!!!

ginge, i would feel the same was as you if i only had the turbo
the fact of having the bm helps not needing a new car, the bmw is far from new but feels so much more refined much much newer than the turbo so its great on that score, but just no fun. couldnt really put up with either on there own as everyday cars, having the two balances it out really well,
one for pleasure (when it works )
one for travelling in comfort and to do the miles
carl
p.s regading the 46 m3, is a great car, csl does look the billy bollox, if i could justify spending 18k on a car which will lose easy 6k in the next 4 years i would get one

Since when was a cossie a sportscar? I had it down as a performance saloon - huge difference.
A cossie is very cheap performance. Considering the package, and that you can have 300bhp for under 3k, they are very very cheap indeed.
Have you ever had anything more expensive than a cosworth then?
The novelty I was referring to was that a car like a Cosworth can be made to be hugely fast in a straight line, but it takes a lot of money for it to be fast round corners, and it will never offer the feedback and satisfaction that a proper sportscar will offer.... if that's your thing.

interesting read guys
took the car out at the weekend, still is great to drive (apart from the creaking rear suspension)
also drove my friends TVR and dropped in on a friend who has just taken delivery of a westfield SEi kit, and is building it in his garage now, so jealous
will keep the saff for at least another six months, i reckon, then maybe buy something more sensible and get myself a weekend toy in the shape of a trackday car
but i may change my mind again tomorrow

I dont see the point in trailering the car to shows cos its just a show peice then but i do only drive mine in the dry. I got a fiesta zetec for every day so when i get in the car i love it .
Get yourself a second car and you will appreciate the cossie more when you do drive it

at minute i'm pretty lucky as i get to use my girlfriends car for most times when i dont want to use the cossie.
but........she is looking for a new job so may need her car now, so i will need other transportation to get to work and back.
my car is totally reliable, but i dont want to use it for the work commute, as it will drink petrol, and dont want it getting damaged.
spose i need to write this all down as a runaround may not save me enough in petrol to justify it
decisions decisions. i will use my cossie, ran or shine, day or night, but just get a little paranoid about leaving it in multistorys, tescos (fucking trolleys) and leaving it an areas i dont know overnight.
