Info on VW Golf's required please...
Im after a golf but in the trader there are literally millions of them... Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about them..
options are
1.8T 20V GTI
1.8 GTI
2.0 GTI
2.3 V5
budget is upto 5k, which I hope is enough to get a decent one..
Ideally, leather and air con..
Just after peoples opinions on which one is the best option really..
thanks

thanks for replys..
Im not after a performance car as such as I'd just go out an buy a RWD Saff so if its a little boring, then no problem... will just be left in Train car park as I commute to London every day by train..
Something reliable, with comfort as semi decent looks...
Is the V5 a better car??

Try and have a look at the A3's, 98-02. You wont get a facelift model but i got a 1.8t sport with leather and every extra for 4.4k nearly a year ago with just under 80k on it. Well worth a look.

My mate just bought a 2.3 V5 (mk4, can't remember what year it is tho) with about 60/70k on it for £3800. Other than a few little stone chips and the paint on the bonnet dulling a little, there's nothing wrong with it, goes like stink (for what it is) and is a really smooth, quiet and capable drive. I'm actually impressed, although it IS a little uninspiring(sp)....

Depends whether you're deadset on wanting a golf or not?
As the A3 and seat leon/toledos/vw boras are where the bargins are.
Personally i'd go for the 1.8t gti, can be tuned to over 300bhp iirc - there was a thread about this the other day? i reckon the basic 2.0 and 1.8 models will be very slow and boring tbh, the 2.3 isn't that clever either, theres very little scope for tuning and the 2.3 is supposedly a heavy drinker on fuel.
Now if you don't mind a seat toledo you can probably get a full spec one for about £4k with cruise, air con, leather etc etc. Or a seat leon cupra 1.8t again with aircon and leather for under £5k
If you can stretch to 6-7k then a 2.8 4wd bora/golf would be something different.
Or theres the diesel, don't get the 90bhp one, i've found they seem to suffer in the reliabilty stakes than other ones, should be able to get one under £5k but will probably have over 100k miles.

I'm almost positive they didn't do a 20 turbo, thought its was NA which makes it slooooow.
IMO I'd avoid the 2 litre as again, its not particularly exciting.
The v5 is very thirsty and no quicker than the 1.8 turbo. Dunno why VW bothered making them tbh.
Best bet is either a 1.8 turbo or 130 diesel. Diesel has loads of torque but are hard to find with low mileage at that money.
I had a 150 diesel anniversary which was the best car I've owned, can't believe I sold it!!! I paid £13500 for it, ran it for 18 months (well it sat in the garage most of time) and sold it for £13500 to the first person who came to view it!
Sold it with the view of buying an e46 m3/audi cab/bmw x5 next year, but miss the golf so much I'm considering buying a mk4 r32.

the 2.0 litre is non turbo and slow...and not economical either...
As for seat leon/toledos/vw boras being bargains....theyre quite crap tho imo and they are bargains because of such. Golfs hold their money well

golfs only hold they're money better cos people think leons/toledos are rubbish cos they have a seat badge on the front, much like the skoda octavia, take a golf and a octavia of the same spec/condition and the golf will always be worth more money cos people don't like the skoda brand. Even though it's almost the same car and built just aswell i've found.

this is my ibiza cupra it uses the 20v turbo vag engine and is basically a golf underneath
great interior and capable of starship milage
20v turbo is the engine to go for mate

Like sierra cosworths. They ARE sierra with fast engines....END OF. But a saff cos in good cond goes for 5k plus, and a saff LX goes for 500 if its lucky..
It doesnt matter why, the golf holds its value...so its a good buy.

this was the anniversary that I owned, had it remapped to just shy of 200 bhp with a boat load of torque.
