Default any sparkys in the house?

here goes with the questions

i need to put in a 30amp curciut in the fuse box to run the new compressor i've got, but are all the breakers the same?
or would i need to find out which one i've got to get a compatable breaker?

the fuse box in the garage is rated at 100 amps and i'm only running one lighting curcut, the security light and one set of plugs from it (5 amp, 5 amp and 13 amp) so i should have plenty spare (it';s only got 5 slots on it total)

it's been the best part of 15 years since i got my certificates for this sort of stuff and everyting has moved on, so can i even do this instal myself without getting osmeone in who's "qualified" to put it in?

can i get this breaker from the likes of b&q or wickes of the like then or does it have to be a specialist electricalicty shop?

first you gotta find out what size protection (be it fuse or mcb) is feeding this board! the board itself is rated at 100amp but i bet its protected by something a little (a lot) smaller! so find what is feeding it

you do get different type of mcb's for different boards, but b&q will have them,, but a good electrical shop will have them and make sure they are the right ones if you just give them the make of the board

erally you do need a quailfied sparkie to do this work for you,, but as its your own house just say the new circuit has always been there but if you do have a sparkie friend,, a continuity test and earth loop test would be nice for piece of mind

we've got 2 fuse boards in the main house, both supplied by wires that the electric board put there

i know we've got 7 breakers in one and about 9 in the other that are "live"

so the scenario is along these sorts of lines:

i need to find out which one feeds the fuse box in the garage, find the make, up the rating on that one so that it's good for the rating in the garage (assuming it not already rated for that, but seeing how the house was fuly rewierd 3 years ago i can't see that being a problem) find the one in the garage, find out which model it is to get the right rating for that one too

the next question is, do i need to go for a breaker rating hirer than the supply (as in cars you match the thickness of wire to the fuse capability so that the fuse blows before the wires melt if you catch my drift)?
so if i've got cable that is 10.5mm2 (i think thats the one i've got floating baout)would i need a breaker that was 32 amp or would i need one that was 30 or would i need one that was 27 or soemthing silly like that?

as i said, it's been a long time since i did this for a living and i can't rememebr the exact stuff i'm supposed to be doing i'll be getting my sparky guy to fit it all up but it would be nice to have the stuff ready for him to fit in 10 minutes rather than spend the whole day (which i can't afford time OR money wise) trampsing around shops looking for something that is no longer available meaning i'd have to get a whole new fuse box for the garageanyway (it's about 10 years old)

[quote-]up the rating on that one so that it's good for the rating in the garage[/quote]

oooow dont do that,,,, find the rating first

you rate the fuse for the maxium curretn carrying capacity of the cable (this includes correction factors)

there is nothing wrong with running a massive cable and having it proected by a small fuse,,, but you cant run a thin cable and have it protected by a massive fuse

if you have 10mm cable there,, use it,,, cable is expensive at the mo you could get away with a small cable,, but as you have it,, use it )
