Default Any Graphic designers?.......advice please

Evenin

Right im studying graphic design at nightschool at the local college (thats where ive been lately for those wondering where ive been lol).

At the end of ill hopefully come out with an HND, can anybody give me some advice as to what jobs this can take me into and what kind of salaries are going about in the realm. the course seems to be geared towards advertising and that sort of media.

Things are going really well with it and i want to make a career out of it as financial services is a bit of a sleeping pill if im honest.

Can anybody shed some light?

Cheers in advance

Pete

i did graphics wen i was at college. i only managed to get a ND as i failed my first yr of foundation for my degree. i would say for u mate, your next step is to start contacting some companies and to build up a good port folio of your work to show any interested parties. graphics jobs are quite few and far between if u dont have any experience or a top degree honours, i wasnt able to find anything. but dont let that put u off or worry u, coz im sure u worked harder at college than i did and u seem quite motivated about it all, unlike how i was lol. But yea, start contacting companies telling them what ya doin and that u will be looking for work or a trainee position. possibly arrange to visit some studios to see what goes on to, thats a good way of gettin ya foot in the door

best of luck

Yes Carl HND at night college

HN course over the first year and completion of second year will result in either the Certificate or the Diploma, bit of graft as well.

and im doing this with no prior experience and missing out the NC course as well since that was a full time course which i have dont have the time to do since i work full time.

What did you do with the diploma carl?

Mike im planning on getting round some companies in edinburgh and surrounding areas to try and get placement at some point

anyone else?

Most decent commercial printers have/need in house graphic designers if you can't get into the actual design companys themselves.

hmmmmmm....

well, i did my ND a few yrs back now, and times change,....

anyways,...
i did a nd in technical illustration, and although ive got a nd in it, i ended up as a printer,...

left college, wanted a job and a car,....etc,...blah blah....rests history..

best bet is to get into print designing, as theres soooo many people that are designers that think they can do it, but it is a whole different process than just design this, design that,...

print companies really NEED good designers that know the layiout and print side....

and with that knowledge if you want to go on your own, you can demand good money, and still design other freelance stuff, but still able to design for print, and as said,...many many designers cant straight off......

although,....i would try and get somewhere, then when you ve been there a yerar, fuck it off and go freelance, that way you dictate what you charge, as for some reason the print game just isnt a hugely paid job to be in at the moment,....and with sooooo many compaines going under you need to get into a good one to start with....

also, try and develope your ability on all different programmes....as the print industry as i know it, there are soooo many different programmes they use...

ie: our co uses corel...which is a fucking mint programme, even got it at home i love it,...takes the piss outta photoshop.....but, many other printers we use, use diferent programmes...like quark, adobe illustrator eetc,.....so there you go,...hth...
