Default Motor Trading

Me and my Missus have been buying and selling the odd car here and there for a few years and now quite fancy doing it for a living and setting up a business. We know the type of vehicle we want to specialise in (not Fords) but are not sure what guidelines we need to follow regarding warranties etc. We are due to see an accountant freind of ours this week, but he isnt to sure about the more specific laws relating to the Motor Trade.

Any advice or website links would be greatly appreciated.

Ta!

good luck, you are going to need it,selling cars direct to public is one of the crapest jobs around in my opinion,to many at it now weather above board or bedroom traders, the hassle and messing about just does your head in,did it for 10 years and was good to start with but just got harder and harder and the complaints got worse and worse, people now want so much for fook all,the attitude of folk has also changed dramatically over the years.

plus side is used car sales have just passed the new car sales so the money is out there.

Got to agree with Tim

Cars are a pain in the arse ,,People expect a brand new car for 3k thats 10 years old Moaning about every little thing , and when it goes wrong 8 months after they bought it and the dash bulb has blown ( major problem ) there on your back

Good luck ,,you will need it

I always thought a trader has to give a minimum of 28 days warrenty for mechanical or electrical failure. 'Failure' being the key word.

I agree though, theres a big difference from selling a few every now and then and doing it properly and full time. But good luck to you both i say.

Lol @ Paddy

There is a lot of good points also , its just getting harder tho Paddy , with e/bay and the web , people seem to do nothing but quote what they can buy from either to you without seeing them cars tho

Having said that its a good trade to be in when things are good

Anyway im off to sit in my rocking chair and grunt and groan , with my pipe

You have a PM dieselwotsermajig

Like I said in the PM [and these guys are more than aware, having spent their twilight years grabbing at their monacles to read the new laws ] selling Warranties is a minefield with the recent[ish] FSA regulations, basically find yourself a decent 3rd party firm to do it for you

It is a great game to be in when it's good

And Paul you're right! The web has meant everyones a fucking expert So you have to be that much more competitive be it through price or offering a better service! My old man has been on the premises I am currently at for 18 years and a lot of our custom is repeat. God knows why though as i must tell half a dozen people a day to fuck off somewhere else

Seriously though when someone says "I saw one of those [£X amount] cheaper on the Trader"

The first question I ask is "Why didn't you buy it then?"

You normally get "it was sold"

And give them a brief explanation of what a "call bird" is and how I can list off 10 stupidly cheap cars that are sold as well
